Human Nature

C
Entertaining at times and a yawn at others

By Lee Tistaert

The experience of seeing Human Nature is almost that of falling asleep in front of your television at midnight, only to wake up at around three in the morning half awake to a really weird show on; while not a horrible experience, it's certainly not one that you would want to experience again anytime soon. Human Nature feels like a quirky little idea that may have sounded fun for a short little skit about a fourth of its running time, but a whole feature presentation on it is just too much.

The film was created by the makers of Being John Malkovich, and while the said comedy (Malkovich) achieved on both an original and entertaining level, Human Nature is a flick with about as many hits as it has misses.

Human Nature follows a group of three very strange individuals. One is a scientist (Tim Robbins) who has a particular knack for teaching mice table manners, another is a woman who finds out that she has natural body hair as that of an ape, and another character, an ape (Rhys Ifans), who is one of the center focuses in Robbins' experiment in translating to human conditions.

As I departed the theater when the movie concluded, one of the first things that popped up into my head was, "that was one of the strangest movies I have ever seen". The film has a touch of that quirky feeling from Malkovich, but a lot of the times it more so feels as if you are watching some weird ass, somewhat poorly captured episode on the Discovery Channel or something. None of the performances are anything to rave about, but Human Nature does provide some laugh-out-loud moments throughout the ride, just more on a hit-and-miss basis. It feels like one of those Saturday Night Live skits which are adapted into a full length hour and a half feature film where much of it is retired humor that could have simply remained as a short skit.

While I was not kicking and screaming throughout Human Nature as other worse films out there, the comedy is nothing to rush out to and would fit more appropriately as the one flick to catch on video that Saturday night when you have nothing better to do. Nothing significant here, but a ride that is entertaining at times and a yawn at others.
