Ben Neal's Best/Worst List of 2001

1)A.I.: Artificial Intelligence: A perfect combination of Spielberg's heart tugging and Kubrick's icy intellect. FX, acting and a tear jerking finale easily makes this the best film of 2001.

2)Moulin Rouge: Director Baz Luhrman brings the musical back to life in this daring, colorful and highly entertaining piece of film.

4)A Beautiful Mind: Crowe delivers what is quite possibly the best depiction of mental illness of committed to film. His supporting cast is also fantastic; will have you thinking about it for days. Director Ron Howard's best work to date.

5)The Others: Kidman's Oscar worthy performance, creepy atmosphere and a shocking ending will make you want to see it again and makes this flick one of the best of the year.

5)K-PAX: With great acting and chemistry by Spacey and Bridges, as well as plenty of twists K-PAX is easily one of the most under-rated films of the year. You will be discussing the ending with friends for days.

6)Ocean's 11: Possibly the best popcorn film I've ever seen. Clooney and Pitt shine in this fun heist film directed by Steven Soderbergh.

7)The Pledge: This effective psychological thriller with a deliberate pace will never bore you. Nicholson gives another great performance, Penn's direction should (but won't) land him a Best Director nod.

8)Bridget Jones's Diary: While some will blow this off simply as a run of the mill "chick flick", if you give this flick a chance you can't help but like this hilarious romantic comedy.

9)15 Minutes:  If taken a satire on the media instead of an action flick, this film may possibly be the most under-rated film since The Big Kahuna.

10)Spy Game: Tony Scott's fine direction of this intense, gritty spy drama is good enough to get the final spot on my Top 10 list. This film gets your attention in the first scene and keeps it to the closing credits.

Ben's Worst 10 of 2001

1)Glitter: There's really not anything I can say to tell you how bad this film is.

2)Pearl Harbor: While the bombing sequence is decent, the other 2 hours and 20 minutes is pure hell.

3)3,000 Miles to Graceland: A lackluster heist film. Do yourself a favor and see Ocean's 11 instead.

4)The Fast and the Furious: Combine mindless action with young actors who can't act, add in some urban appeal and you've got this film.

5)Scary Movie 2: I find it scary that this film made over $70 million domestically.

6)Rush Hour 2: The extremely annoying Tucker will not shut up in this unfunny buddy cop sequel.

7)Jurassic Park 3: Hmm...dinosaurs chase stupid humans on an island...haven't I seen this before?

8)Tomb Raider: Even the action is poorly executed in this mess of a film.

9)Driven: Stallone's wooden acting ruins this flick, directed by Renny Harlin. Did  anyone notice that the crashes looked too CGI-ish?

10)The Mummy Returns: I found the original was a very fun, but this piece of crap is just ILM showing off what they can do.

The Crouching Tiger,  Hidden Dragon Award (the most over-rated film of the year):
(3 way tie) Memento, Shrek and Lord of the Rings
