| Prisoner of Azkaban Review |
(Slight Spoilers) I truly can't believe the superlatives being heaped on this film- it is close to being the worst film i've ever seen. Don't get me wrong, i adore fantasy films. My favourite films of all time include the likes of Labyrinth, Willow and, of course, the Lord of the Rings films. Compared to these, however, HP3 is like a bad student movie. It follows exactly the same template as the previous 2- we start off at the Dursleys, Harry get's into trouble and causes a bit of havoc, we head to Hogwarts, each professor is gradually introduced to us with a tedious class in which Harry is invariably singled out in some way, Hermione uncovers the key to whichever dilemma Harry finds himself in, Ron gets taken along for the laughs, and Dumbledore sits back while three novices take it upon themselves to deal with issues of life and death. Honestly, is nobody getting sick of this formula by now?! As for the acting... Emma Watson makes an able Hermione, but a film cannot hope to rely on Daniel Radcliffe if it is to involve the viewer to any meaningful degree. It's clear that he was cast entirely because of his uncanny resemblance to the original Harry Potter drawings, as the guy doesn't have an acting bone in his body. He's beyond wooden. The direction totally misses the point as well- fantasy films aren't meant to feel gritty and realist. As for being dark? Please. Setting scenes at night-time does not a dark movie make. The Dementors are spooky enough, but they're never given the chance to be truly malicious. I had high hopes for them after seeing the trailer, but they're just token nasties, totally impotent and pointless.
Everyone i've spoken to who's seen the film has agreed that it's lost some of the magic, something that made the first two films a bit more interesting. Chamber of Secrets remains the best for my money- it has humour, a nice nod to classic fantasy (the unicorn), a decent plot, and a sense of magic. Thank God Cuaron is vacating the director's chair for the next one- maybe a Brit can give Harry Potter that extra bit of magic it's lacking. And please, give the quidditch a break! |
