I wish you had an A-minus category, because that's how I wanted to rate "Cold Mountain." It was excellent in that it did not sentimentalize the Civil War. Instead, it showed that every war is alike -- no matter how noble the cause, war makes ordinary people engage in brutality.
The photography, music and acting were superb. (I can't see too much of Phillip Seymour Hoffman!) It was the plot that seemed rather fishy.
The transformation of Ada (or was it Ida --impossible to tell with the Southern accent) from a helpless Southern belle into a woman of the soil was somewhat abrupt as was her immediate pregnancy.
It also strained credulity that the elderly neighbor bounced back so completely from the brutal murder of her entire family. And for Ruby to decide she loved her father after all. Finally, it was too contrived for the hero to meet his fate the way he did, after schlepping across country and surviving so many awful situatons -- well, I don't want to say more in case someone is reading this who has neither seen the movie nor read the book. Grade: A
