A really great alternative to the 'wham bam thankyou maam' action flicks this summer, this film both surprised and delighted me. I am not normally a huge fan of Hanks or Spielberg but after seeing this out of curiousity, I can safely say that this is the best-acted, most thoughtful and ,surprisingly, funniest film of the year, while never using the laughs (in a similar vein to Forrest Gump's) to detract from the drama that drives the story. Hanks is on top form again after his lacklustre turn in The Ladykillers and a great supporting cast provide many laughs. Spielberg avoids any possible Hollywood cliches, and while this may not be a particularly commercialised film in this respect and may not, as a result, find the audience it deserves, I found it very refreshing.
The best film to come out so far this year (with Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind just behind).
HIGHLY RECCOMENDED.
