- Reviewed in the United States on August 18, 2014I saw Death to Smoochy when it was released in movie theatres. I had seen the trailer on TV, and it looked so oddball, out of the ordinary, with a nice cast, directed by Danny DeVito, I decided I had to see it. I wasn't missing this. When I saw it, the theatre didn't have many people in it. I went with a friend, who was somewhat interested in seeing the movie, he didn't mind the cast, and when he heard I was going, he didn't argue, he figured he'd give it a shot, and we went to see the movie.
The first few minutes of the movie, I was a bit worried, with Rainbow Randolph dancing around on the kiddie show... That didn't last too long, until the comedy picked up, and the tone changed. We had a great time, from start to finish.
The basic plot is Rainbow Randolph loses his well paying job as a kid's television host (Not the same way Pee-Wee lost his), the network has problems finding a replacement since all the other stars are elsewhere or have their own problems, so the network decides they have to start with something fresh. The rest of the movie involves Rainbow Randolph trying to get his show back, and Smoochy, new to TV, figuring out exactly how kid's TV really works behind the scenes.
I can't say I'm surprised the movie did poorly at the box office, however I'm surprised it did as poor as it did. The subject may have turned people off, or had been a bit too odd for someone to even want to give it a chance. About the only time I hear people have heard of Death to Smoochy, is because Henry Rollins has talked in stand-up and such about how he auditioned for a role in the movie, but didn't get the part, and how he felt he would have done the role better.
The movie is full of great writing, lots of memorable lines, most from Williams, "SAFAAAAAAAAAAARI!", "It's small but it's fierce!", "It was an accident", "You bring the hammer?", "Somebody touched my ass!", etc..
The movie is not perfect, it has a few lulls here are there, but not many movies can keep such a pace. The characters in the movie are all pretty well thought out, and they're over-the-top in a way that's fitting for a movie titled, "Death to Smoochy".
Death to Smoochy is one of a kind. It made a big impression on me in 2002. It's one of the better movies I've seen in the past 15 years.
I am surprised since Robin Williams died, no place, that I've noticed, has mentioned this movie. It's a shame, too. I think it's a great adult comedy that he starred in. The movie allowed Robin Williams to do his thing with the character, and I can't imagine anyone else playing the part of Rainbow F^#$@** Randolph. It wouldn't have been the same film without Robin Williams.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 14, 2024Death to Smoochy was an underrated 2002 dark comedy about the seedy and corrupt underbelly of children's television. Directed by the always talented Danny Devito and sporting a great cast, the film infamously was a major box office flop and quickly forgotten. However, it became a cult classic and became a favorite of dark comedy fans mostly thanks to Robin Williams' insanity on screen as disgraced kids show host Rainbow Randolph. Edward Norton plays the dorky Smoochy perfectly, Katherine Kenner John Stewart, Harvey Fierstein, Devito and others deliver an insane laugh fest with everything from rocket cookies, Irish mobsters, "special" co-hosts, goose steppers, ice shows, sing-a-longs and smack addicts.
Shout finally released this on BR as this only had one DVD release in the early 2000s. The movie was the middle chapter in Robin Williams famous dark trilogy sandwiched between Insomnia and One Hour Photo (though none of the movies are connected). The movie looks amazing with its restoration and Shout did its thing with cramming whatever extras in it. There are three new interviews though the only actor interviewed was Danny Woodburn who played Randloph's and Smoochy's side kick Angelo. The only other extras are old ones ripped right from the DVD release like audio commentary by Devito.
Overall if you ever wanted to watch this hidden gem, this is the best way to watch out there. So if you love dark comedies, kids shows, or Robin Williams being unleashed you'll have a ball. Enjoy this with a loved one, sit back and remember that wonderful little Smoochy song "My stepdad is not mean, he's just adjusting".
- Reviewed in the United States on September 18, 2024I completely skipped this when it first came out due to uniformly bad reviews, 'Death to Smoochy' now comes across as a comedy classic. This is mostly due to the loss of Robin Williams, who gets a showcase for his more earthy side here. Do NOT mis-interpret this as a movie for children, as it revels in very questionable taste. From crooked kids' television show hosts to a woman with a mascot fetish - even taking a swipe at 'Raging Bull' - this one aims to push buttons. The initial negative reviews demonstrate how well it achieved those goals.
While Robin Williams is as over-the-top maniacally great as expected, Edward Norton goes toe-to-toe with him in a very nuanced performance. The rest of the cast is also perfect. Overall, the feel is of a fairy tale gone very, very wrong. Yet it also becomes, against all expectations, a feel-good movie. If you are in the mood for something funny but challenging, this is perfect!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Smoochy Show
Children's TV show host Rainbow Randolph is fired after a corruption and bribery scandal and replaced with the squeaky clean Sheldon Mopes and his purple dinosaur act Smoochy. A bitter and twisted Randolph then decides to get revenge and kill Smoochy. Dark and twisted and absolutely hilarious, this comedy gem is one of Robin Williams best comic performances and one of his most underrated films with excellent performances too from Edward Norton as Sheldon, Catherine Keener as a Network executive and Danny DeVito who also directs as a sleazy agent, the type of role that Danny DeVito can do in his sleep but it's still fun to see and it's also his best film as a director. A razor sharp satire on the cutthroat world of children's TV, a huge flop at the time of release in 2002 but perhaps audiences just didn't get the joke or like Robin Williams in such a dark role, his attempts to kill Sheldon coming across like a live action Road Runner cartoon. A cult comedy classic.

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm going on a safari, *Censored* SAH-FAR-I!
I remember watching (and owning) this movie on VHS when it came out. For a movie with such big named stars attached to it, I don't recall there being a lot of promotion for it. That ended up working it for it though, because it has since become a cult hit.
Robin Williams was espically hilarious in this movie, and it was made during the time he was taking "darker" film roles like "One Hour Photo" and "Insomnia" for example.
I highly recommed this movie to anyone who likes the more black comedies, fans of Robin Williams (R.I.P) or anyone looking to sit down and watch a hilarious (and twisted) movie.
The Audio and Video where amazing, but of course would expect nothing less from Shout!

4.0 out of 5 stars Let's go to smoochy's magic jungle!

5.0 out of 5 stars if you like a dark satirical comedy
Frigging HILARIOUS! honestly, if you like a dark satirical comedy, check it out.
I bought it recently, after Robin Williams passed away, to share it with my boyfriend who had never seen it. He laughed loads and was chuffed we've got our own copy now :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Für mich eine Art Klassiker
