Product Description
A writer is unable to financially support his family when his publisher rejects his most recent novel. While drowning his troubles at a local bar, he meets Luther (Mick Jagger), the head of an exclusive escort service, who recruits the desperate, down-and-out author into the business. He is assigned to be the male escort for Andrea Alcott (Olivia Williams), a beautiful and lonely woman who also ju

Add The Man from Elysian Fields to the list of essential movies about the pains of writing. This wry comedy-drama charts the frustrations of a financially strapped novelist (Andy Garcia) as he desperately and secretly agrees to be an "escort" for ladies who need, ah, escorting. This leads him into a Faustian bargain to help a beautiful client (Olivia Williams) whose husband, a once-great, now-dying writer (a mighty James Coburn), is struggling with a final work. Of course the fact that the men are sharing a project and a woman complicates matters--and Garcia's loyal wife (Julianna Margulies) is curious about all these nights spent away. The movie explores different levels of compromise and betrayal, yet it remains tartly amusing throughout. And it has a glorious casting inspiration: the director of the mysterious escort service is played by Mick Jagger, looking decadently elegant and purring like a vaguely satanic Siamese cat. --Robert Horton

- Reviewed in the United States on November 17, 2018The "Man From Elysian Fields" is an excellent film. It has an A-list cast, great dialog delivered poignantly by an ensemble of well-developed characters, good urban cinematography and a plot that belies initial expectations by creating suspension of disbelief. Don't give up on this movie. The trivial treatment of the backstory in the first ten minutes or so made me abandon the film for a while, but I eventually resumed watching, and it was the best film decision I've made in a long time. Once the superficial story lines are plotted, the film takes some unexpected, dark and twisting turns into the unpredictablity of human nature. The "Man From Elysian Fields" was released almost 20 years ago, but its timeless story of redemption clearly has stood the test of time for me. The age of the film gave me a chance to see a young Andy Garcia and Juliana Margulies, a younger Angelica Houston and Mick Jagger (yes, that one), and a still vital James Coburn the year before he passed away. I haven't provided any plot details because the film warrants discovery on their own. Five stars.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 30, 2017I really enjoyed this movie. I found it doing a search on Prime. It sounded a bit suspect from the movie summary but I was curious about a movie that has Mick Jagger and Andy Garcia (Say what?). To my surprise the acting was very good and the storyline had depth and was very tasteful. Even though the focus is around and escort there was a very romantic quality throughout the movie and I somehow felt bad for Andy's character. I do not condone his actions ay way but we don't know what we would do if put in any situation; nor can we negate the repercussions.
The way that Cali was portrayed was refreshing....not the usual glitter and gold. Just real people living lives in Southern California where some days are just not sunny. And the cinematography was very good; it sometimes had an old-time feel to it. I especially liked the ocean scenes, I am glad I stumbled upon this hidden gem.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 29, 2016David Bowie would have been more convincing than Mick Jagger. Andy Garcia is sort of a willess schmuck. I did enjoy the film,it might fit into the date-night genre for the under 35 age-bracket. For me, it was the music that made a light-weight movie seem overly ponderous. It has a really predictable plot, rather unbelievable, but it does remind me of a decent fairy-tale. The film is well directed, the pacing is OK. What's not to like? See for yourself.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 10, 2017This is not what I expected...a writer without inspiration or money is not exactly a new concept. This movie presented new ideas however. I loved it. I wish that I could find a man like Andy Garcia...his heart and his humanity are always on full display in everything he does and this is no exception. The only word I can think of to describe this movie is sweet...and the plot line really does not suggest sweet. I recommend this to anyone looking for something new that does not rely on pyrotechnics and special effects. This is a movie about honest human emotion and some not so honest actions. Not a movie for children, perhaps, although there is not really anything objectionable in it, but they simply would not understand. More appropriate for those more mature souls who understand more subtle interactions.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 31, 2017A happily married writer (Garcia's character) cannot get published, and cannot find a job - so he becomes a high class hooker. This script is so bad - it's kitschy - but the kitsch does not save it entirely. The dialogue is cheesy beyond belief, and the acting is overly emotive (I don't think Garcia knows any other method). The plot - an author with a Yale degree can't find any work to bring in money for his family - whom he adores. Ironically enough he wanted to write about migrant workers, but never considers working along side them (a paycheck, and research). Waiter, substitute teacher, sales work, etc. - all jobs easily available - but he becomes a prostitute.
Two stars because of the kitsch, and the fact that somehow the producer talked a lot of very good actors to act in this hot mess. It really has a feel of a bad after-school special. Watch it perhaps for the kitsch - don't expect much else.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 15, 2018In Greek Mythology, the Elysian Fields is a place of existence reserved for the souls of the most virtuous and heroic individuals. The Elysian Fields in this film are far from that. It is an escort service for which Byron Tiller, played by Andy Garcia, joined because he desperately needed a job. Byron, a writer, could not get his work published. As an escort, he became intimate with Andrea Allcott, the wife of a renowned author Tobias Allcott, played by James Coburn. Tobias, who is much older than Andrea, and in very poor health, in fact, he is dying, is aware of the intimacy between Byron and his wife, and even approves of it. Tobias is having difficulty writing his last book and strikes a deal with Byron to co-author his last book with him, which Byron agrees. Byron, however, writes the book. Byron's wife, Dena, who dearly loves Byron, is unaware of any of this, i.e., that he works for an escort service and is intimately involved with Andrea Allcott.
Byron writes the book. And what happens when Tobias dies is what makes the Elysian Fields seem more like the dark bowels of Hades.
Andy Garcia is outstanding as Byron, and James Coburn is excellent as Tobias. Mick Jagger puts in a very good performance as the owner of The Elysian Fields. And the supporting cast is superb.
This is a tense film which will hold your interest throughout.

1.0 out of 5 stars Man From Elysian Fields review
Unfortunately this DVD was posted to me in Australia from the Northern Hemisphere in the incorrect PAL format, therefore it was unfit for purpose. Perhaps the distributors could be aware of this for future reference. I ordered through Amazon.com.au, incorrectly assuming Australian distribution.

5.0 out of 5 stars Happy I bought this without knowing the story in advance.
The story seems to be well enough described, so I will just say why I give it 5 stars.
Every actor seems to be just the right picked person for each role, and I have never seen James Coburn better.
Since I never bought Stones Music, but got catched by Brian Auger and Miles Davis, I didn`t know much about Mick Jagger.
Mick Jagger was to me a very pleasant surprise. What a personality! His charisma kept me glued to the chair from
the moment he entered the room. In fact I wasn`t in the right mood to sit down with a film that evening, but this one sure
got my attention. I guess this film needs an audience with some life experience. Specially those of us that had to start from
scratch a few times, when all doors seemed closed to get a new job, and freelance solutions were the only risky challenge left.
To me, Mick Jagger and his personality gave the extra edge to this film, and makes me rate it 5 instead og 4 stars.
I knew the other actors and their quality, so they gave what I expected of them.
This is a film to watch many times as years goes by. I`ve watched it two times in two weeks now, and I still love it !

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent seller and product
Product was exactly as described, brand new with security seals and wrapping. There was a problem with non-delivery at first (not Wonderbook's fault, they shipped quickly), but Wonderbook was quick to respond and process a refund. I found the package stuffed in my mailbox much later and notified Wonderbook, so hopefully they get paid for the product they sold me. Customer service was friendly, apologetic, and responsive - would buy from them again in the future!
For the movie: It's an underrated and somewhat difficult film to find. I randomly saw it on a plane ages ago; don't remember where I flew to, but I remembered the film.
The cast and performances are top-notch. It's one of my favourite offerings from Andy Garcia, and Mick Jagger has surprising screen presence. It's one of the few films I've ever seen that I think could have actually done with less music to enhance the emotions of a scene, because the performances and inherent drama spoke for themselves. I'm also a big fan of dramas that have a bit of comedy mixed in, it makes it feel more realistic (which this film does effectively). Great script.
The themes and plot of the movie I'm sure can be found elsewhere, so I'll just say it's definitely worth a watch. I'm not going to nitpick it here - I thoroughly enjoy the film every time I see it, and that's the important thing!

5.0 out of 5 stars Sehenswert
