Product Description
Academy Award(R)-nominee Edward Norton (Best Actor, 1999, AMERICAN HISTORY X) heads an amazing all-star cast in the critically acclaimed Spike Lee (SUMMER OF SAM, DO THE RIGHT THING) film 25th HOUR. In 24 short hours Monty Brogan (Norton) goes to prison for seven long years. Once a king of Manhattan, Monty is about to say good-bye to the life he knew -- a life that opened doors to New York's swankest clubs but also alienated him from the people closest to him. In his last day on the outside, Monty tries to reconnect with his father (Brian Cox, THE BOURNE IDENTITY), and gets together with two old friends, Jacob (Philip Seymour Hoffman, ALMOST FAMOUS) and Slaughtery (Barry Pepper, THE GREEN MILE). And then there's his girlfriend, Naturelle (Rosario Dawson, MEN IN BLACK 2), who might (or might not) have been the one who tipped off the cops. Monty's not sure of much these days, but with time running out, there are choices to be made as he struggles to redeem himself in the 25th hour.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 16, 2013This movie made 2 hours and 15 minutes fly by... for a 22 year-old male, like myself, I found this movie to have all the right elements. Here's a quick summary of the whole thing: Monty (Edward Norton) is a drug dealer who has been sentenced to seven years in prison after being cornered by the DEA. He spends his last day of freedom talking to his father (Brian Cox) and setting up a shindig so that he can see his girlfriend Naturelle (the very sexy Rosario Dawson), and his two best friends Jacob and Frank (Philip Seymour Hoffman, Barry Pepper) one last time. As a celebration he has all of them meet at a nightclub that he used to regularly attend so that they can enjoy his final night as a free man.
What I loved about it:
● Barry Pepper and Philip Seymour Hoffman - the movie is at it's best when these two are on-screen. Not only are their characters both hilarious, but I love how their personalities offset each other. The character Monty is much more believable thanks to these two.
● Edward Norton's rant in the mirror about his disgust for the people of New York, including himself.
● The entire night club scene - especially the gliding effect Spike Lee uses with Anna Paquin and Philip Seymour Hoffman & the surreal, psychedelic feeling that it creates. Seriously, this is probably one of my favorite scenes of any movie.
● The ending (which I don't think could have been done any better) leaves it all open for interpretation.
I bought this movie after only one viewing and enjoyed it even more the second time around. Be sure to check it out!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 10, 2022Monty is a complete idiot. Puts his drugs in his couch cushions, Siragusa rats him out and boom - headed to prison for 7 years.
You dont need any plot, fancy story lines or anything else to make this movie work. Here is a guy with 24- hours before he goes to pound me in the ass prison for 7 years. Sheeeeeeeet. That is drama.
Norton is good as always. The fat dude from Boogie nights and Dottie Pepper's son both are solid. I'm not a huge Rosario Dawson fan, but she is ok as is that gap toothed girl from the Vampire TV show that used to be on HBO.
I like the tone. It makes you feel like you are going to prison. Also made me move my kilos of coke to another spot. So not only was I entertained, I also learned. Best kind of movie.

25th Hour is a 2002 American drama film directed by Spike Lee and starring Edward Norton. Adapted by David Benioff from his own novel The 25th Hour, It tells the story of a man's last 24 hours of freedom as he prepares to go to prison for seven years for dealing drugs.
While many aspects of Monty’s life leading up to his period of incarceration are left up to speculation the manner in which he is introduced and a tour-de-france of vignettes work to explore the easily overlooked complexity of his character. From the very start there are tidbits of humanity snuck in between moments defined by his potential to be ruthless - with his canine companion being a constant reminder of his charismatic allure - and this widens the metaphorical parameter of judgement that can be explored in the span of a mere 24 hours. Burdened with culpability and struggling to come to terms with becoming incarcerated, Monty attempts to make peace with the confidantes he still has while simultaneously making sense of his anticipated losses associated with this prison sentence and the circumstances leading up to it.
When not reveling in the primary conundrum that is Monty’s head-space 25th Hour provides enough information about supporting characters so as to enrich the context in which this story is taking place. Moreover, their separate feelings regarding Monty’s impending incarceration are explored precariously without becoming monotonous or distracting. Frank - an aggressively vivacious trader employed on Wall-Street - presents himself as someone that has no issue with exploiting tragedy when it is of benefit to him and openly expresses thoughts about how Monty is ultimately “getting what he deserves” (But, not to his face, of course). Jacob is an introverted high school teacher with a seething and uncomfortable passion - a developing “crush” on one of his students - who is sympathetic towards Monty and the nature of his situation. James - Monty’s father - reveals in passing feelings of guilt associated with his son’s upbringing and acts as a voice for decisions that could be made if the weight that is personal responsibility was removed as the overarching story develops. A variety of personalities - which, to some, will seem largely unnecessarily - successfully illustrates and elaborates on the internal struggle of insecurity (that also applies to Monty) as a whole in a way that isn’t whiny or begging for pity from audience members.
Given the origin of the screenplay - provided by the original novelist - It’s only natural that 25th Hour is an appropriate culmination of elements that represent Benioff’s unique vision. What is otherwise a slideshow of efforts to reconcile is complimented by scenes that capture the reality of Monty’s plight; there is one in particular where Monty looks in to a mirror while endlessly cursing individuals and groups he considers to be the “plight” of society which concludes with the glaring realization (through literal and metaphorical reflection) that there is only person to blame: himself. An exceptional combination of composure and excess: Norton’s performance shines as a catalogue of mannerisms associated with his repertoire.
Occurring at the intersection of the time that is given and the time that is taken away from its primary character, 25th Hour is a thought provoking piece meant to make audience members ponder over the relationship between the choices people make and the grander context of their existence.
I would recommend!

- Reviewed in the United States on December 30, 2009Each time I watch Edward Norton perform, I raise him higher on my personal Favorites List.
Playing a "slightly bad" bad guy, he has only 24 hours left of freedom before he reports to prison to start a 7 year hitch behind bars. He spends his precious last hours trying to make peace, make up (with his girlfriend) and make the arrangements neccessary (with friends) to take care of some of the things of which he is responsible (i.e.: his dog).
A tough guy to dislike, despite his troubles were over drug sales. Tho his usual monotone delivery (with heavy spikes of loud outbursts) he can deliver emotional upheaval without breaking a sweat. The cast was perfect for his character's support. The sets were all so real looking that I was watching for locations to be listed in the rolling credits. A fine job was done by all.

5.0 out of 5 stars 25TH HOUR DVD
Really good movie you can enjoy without condoning the character of Edward Norton as a drug dealer. His last day before going to prison. This is another fine production by Spike Lee. Really good image on the dvd.
It came early in perfect condition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Spike grows up? Nah, he just changed his emotional fortitude with great results.
I love it when a first viewing just involves you and takes you away for a couple of hours. Even better is when a revisit a few years later still knocks your socks off! It's a quality story, given a mature direction from Spike Lee, one that benefits greatly from a group of characters that each have their own issues, but thankfully they never become annoying. Even more of a result, perhaps? Is that the actors in the main tryst do not falter one bit.
Firstly, Spike Lee directs this piece seemingly free of the emotional anger that has driven many of his finest pictures, and the result is a somewhat beautiful ode to the post 9/11 New York City that he obviously loves. The story that unfolds is a cracker in itself, but it's actually the framing of this story in New York that is the film's main draw card. There are some gorgeous shots in this film, one as the camera zooms between two of our main protagonists talking in a high rise; which reveals a sombre and hopeful shot of ground zero. Secondly there's a sequence under an archway, which as the violence explodes it becomes crucial to the film, and then Lee fades out the sound to just reveal that of birds twittering away as if peace was being found.
Edward Norton is one of the finest actors working today, and here he doesn't disappoint as the lead man trying to tie up all the loose ends of his life before he goes to prison for 7 years. Witness a scene as he rants in a mirror with poignant and impacting dialogue. There are {In my humble opinion of course} very few actors in history who could make this scene work to the degree of impact that Norton achieves. Philip Seymour Hoffman has a very sedate role and it's these type of roles where I think he excels, so much emotion whilst actually not doing much is an incredible feat, and Hoffman is just perfect in this piece. Whilst the best thing I can say about Barry Pepper is that he isn't out of place alongside these two {often considered} modern greats, he well holds his own, and in some scenes he mesmerises as he holds the court.
The lead girl in the film does not fare so well, tho, Rosario Dawson is a sexy vision of delight in a tight fitting silver dress, but as the main female lead she falters in the company she is in. Perhaps that is a touch harsh? But although she doesn't stink the film out, I can't help feeling that a stronger female lead could of competed with the boys and really drove home some of the more critical scenes. Anna Paquin says her lines right and does enough to leave a mark, whilst Brian Cox, fine actor that he is, looks like he is just glad to be in a Spike Lee film. And by that I mean he gives his usual solid show with a tint of smugness about him. Bless him, he's still the governor.
Personally it's a film that I find stays with me for a couple of days and one which I without hesitation want to see again and again over the coming years. With fine acting and directing, and pulsing a human emotive heartbeat for viewer and director alike, 25th Hour is a first rate success. 9/10
