Product Description
Dean (Leitch) is trapped in a working class suburb with an abusive father and a doormat mother whose job at a tony London restaurant allows her to regale her son with stories of her famous customers. Dean runs away from home and gets a job at a posh gallery run by Lady Gryffoyn (Quick), who his mother had often waited on. Soon, Dean insinuates himself into the world of the sex, cocaine, and disco upper class set by presenting himself as lady Gryffoyn's son, funding his deceit with credit card fraud. But Dean eventually learns that reinventing oneself comes at a price.

AKA has been favorably compared to The Talented Mr. Ripley, and for good reason. A fascinating drama about a young, working-class man's fraudulent claim to aristocracy and subsequent rise among the rich and privileged, AKA has a touch of the thriller about it. Matthew Leitch plays 18-year-old Dean, a handsome, beleaguered fellow abused in every conceivable way by a monstrous father and thwarted in his desire for higher education and a lucrative career. Sheltered and polished by a high-society arts matron, Lady Gryffon (Diana Quick), Dean eventually lands on his feet in Paris, gaining entrance to elite circles by pretending to be Lady Gryffon's son and getting caught between the desire of two men. The smart script by writer-director Duncan Roy plays on the paradox of an ambiguous hero whose attractiveness to the rich and jaded is his emotional authenticity and natural frankness. Leitch's performance is mesmerizing, both cryptic and eerily honest. --Tom Keogh

- Reviewed in the United States on April 14, 2020What a delightful film! I had heard so much about this film over the years and I am truly glad that I purchased the dvd which arrived today.
The story is engaging. The acting is excellent in particular Matthew Leigh who convincingly portrays Dean in his transformation into Alex.
The soundtrack was awesome. If you haven’t seen this film, put it on your list of films not to be missed.
Highly recommended!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 7, 2014The creeping hand-held camera welcomes us to the terror of a dysfunctional home. The obvious dollar store budget, which produced this film, didn't bother me. but some of the unequal sound quality did immediately. Our hero's mother, apparently helpless, mumbles and whines. When our "star" leaves home, looking for change, his first little episode seems farsical, as the outrageous friends arrive. Life in his first home away from home doesn't last long enough, and the film goes drudgingly downhill from the moment he leaves, with a dumb script presenting impossibly pretentious and/or embarrassingly stupid characters. We know what's coming, and generally how the story will end. Our hero experiences great emotional growth through his travels, and...HEY!...there's no place like home, standing up to the bully, and winning Mom's heart again.
I didn't really hate this movie altogether, so I give it two stars...which means that I didn't like it, and I would never want to have to sit through it again. It's a bore!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 11, 2005This british movie is a "queer version" of "Mr Ripley", which is not a bad starting point. However there are too many flaws to say this is a good movie. Some actors are probably not professional, especially some bi-characters are extremely bad, overacting and very ennoying. The story is though interesting enough to be worth seeing. There are so many bad gay movies out there, so this one is far from the worse....
- Reviewed in the United States on February 8, 2014Kinda hard to follow at times and then when you think you had it figured out there is another turn.
Seemed like there is lots of plots but the ending was really the best when he told the bastard deadbeat father what he thought of him for what he did to him.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 29, 2009All he did was give "them" what they wanted and he did it very well. Almost dreamlike in it's flow, this story moves swiftly along touching on situations and all kinds of people along the way, making the situations and people better than they were before he breezed through their lifes. Did he hurt anyone? Only himself. He gave a wonderful, slam-bang of a good time to everyone he came in contact with from the start of this film till the credits roll.
I found this film a complete delight.
