Product Description
Gripping action and powerful performances by some of today's hottest stars come together in this epic story of a real-life outlaw who defied the law and inspired his people. Actor Heath Ledger (The Four Feathers, A Knight's Tale) brings a raw intensity to the role of Ned Kelly, an innocent man driven to fight the corrupt authorities oppressing his people. Joining Ned's legendary gang is his best friend, Joe, played with devilish charm by Orlando Bloom (Troy, Pirates of the Caribbean) and sexy Academy Award Nominee Naomi Watts (21 Grams, The Ring) as Ned's lover, Julia. Overnight, the Kelly Gang become heroes to their people. But as their popularity grows, they quickly find themselves the target of a ruthless lawman, (Geoffrey Rush) who soon makes them the most wanted men the world has ever known.

Making no attempt at factual accuracy, Ned Kelly is still an engaging action film with its heart in the right place. You don't need to be a student of Australian history to know that a movie about the life of the notorious folk hero and outlaw is not going to be a light-hearted romp through the outback. Injustice, persecution, and unlawful imprisonment are the meat of his story, all presented here with not too much of a rose-tinted perspective amid generous doses of obligatory action. Rebellious teenager Ned Kelly (Heath Ledger) is wrongfully imprisoned for stealing a horse and, when he returns to the bosom of his large Irish family, finds that the police won't let him go straight. After being accused of a crime he didn't commit, Kelly is left with no option but to go on the run. Accompanied by his gang (among them Orlando Bloom) he robs banks to survive and also to gather the money to free his family from prison. There is some considerable romanticizing of the story and the man himself, due in part to Ledger's affable Robin Hood-esque working-class hero portrayal. Bloom is wide-eyed and daring as Kelly's main man, and Naomi Watts as his married mistress has the thankless task of breaking up some great action sequences to play the unnecessary love interest. Originally filmed as a Mick Jagger vehicle in 1970. --Kristen Bowditch

- Reviewed in the United States on June 30, 2010I bought this movie without seeing it first, but you know what?...I didn't need to! It was a great and very interesting movie!I had only seen the trailer for this when I bought it and I knew it looked good. I have never seen the other Ned Kelly movies, but I really like this one! Also, I never really heard of Ned Kelly to begin with, but I have now! This is a wonderful movie that I HAVE watched more than once. There's also wonderful acting from this cast. Heath Ledger is one of my favorite actors and I think he played a great and intense Ned Kelly. Orlando Bloom also played a very smooth and charming Joe! Naomi Watts and Geoffrey Rush did great as well. I am glad to say that I now know who Ned Kelly was! He was a man and a legend! The bonus features are very interesting and informative, too. I recommend this movie to all movie-watchers!
R.I.P. Heath Ledger<3
- Reviewed in the United States on May 23, 2004I went to see this movie because I'm a fan of several actors in this motion picture and I found a really good film.
The story begins with Ned Kelly and the problems that lead him to jail in the Australia of the beginnings of the 19th century and it shows not only the injustice of the criminal law of those times and the friendship that lives with in the Kelly family but the English, the Irish and the Chinese inmigrants that are finding a way of living in this land during the development of a new nation that is creating it's own identity.
This movie is kind of a Robin Hood that lives in Australia, with a twist of comedy that just makes it a stronger drama, is an really good chronicle with the kind of ending that marks a good historical narration, also it has beautiful landscapes of the Australian soil, I truly liked it :).
- Reviewed in the United States on December 28, 2013Whereas this film is not really historically accurate, it captures the basic spirit og the person and now legendary Ned Kelly. Heath Ledger does a very good job of playing Ned Kelly. Kelly was a poor son of recent Irish immigrants to Australia. Wrongfully imprisoned, he is doomed to the heightened scrutiny of the police who see him as a trouble-maker. His sense of injustice in combination with the killing of 3 policemen in self-defense resulted in a wild rampage of bank robberies and other Robin Hood type adventures. There was considerable tensions between poor Roman Catholic Irishmen, often sent to Australia in leau of prison, and the Protestant English settlers who had considerably more capital investments. Orlando Bloom does a good job playing Joe Byrne, Kell's friend and partner. Lawrence Kerilan and Phillip Baratino play Ned's younger brother and best friend. They were virtually children, aged 16 or 17, as part of the Kelly gang. Naomi Watts offers a performance as a romantic interest of Kelly, but this section seemed tacked on and inconsequential in comparison to Kelly's exploits and his growing recognition of his own embodiment of the resentment of the poor Irish settlers. Two other actors worth mention were the great Brenda Griffiths and Joel Edgerton who plays the shifting traitor Arron Skerrett. A great book on this topic is The True Story of the Kelly Gang by Peter Carey. This was good entertainment even if the story was only partly told.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 5, 2016ok I don't write reviews at all, but i felt like i had to write one for this movie. This movie is great in so many ways. The way the story is told is very poetic. There are metaphors in the scenes that bring so much depth to the characters and the story. Heath ledger is just freaking amazing in this and gives a performance that is unique to the characters in his other movies. And the character that orlando bloom plays is more of a bad boy than what you usually see him play which is cool to see. This movie has a special place in my heart.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 6, 2024Having read a very good book about Ned Kelly by Fitzsimmons and having read that this movie is not historically accurate I had tempered my expectations. Its still only an ok movie. There are some good actors but the movie itself just isnt that great. There is so much potential given the setting and so many of the details from the actual story of this man that it feels like a miss. Its a decent Australian era western/outdoors type movie.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 26, 2023Good!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 17, 2022Why does Hollywood think that Irish people blaspheme the Holy Name like in every sentence? It's caricaturish. As an Irish person I find it offensive.
This version of Kelly's life was off in a very annoying way. There was no upper-class married lover who could have provided an alibi for him, that's Hollywood. The bank managers wife was not seduced by Joe Byrne, that's Hollywood. Aaron's murder didn't happen like that. Ann Jones the Hotelier was a middle-aged woman.
So much was factually wrong here. Interestingly the 1971 version with Jagger is far superior.
I was disappointed it ended with him being taken to Melbourne on the train. There was a lot more to his life after that, including his biting words to the irritated Judge Barry, and the meeting with his mother in the prison hospital. she was only feet away from the spot where he was hanged.
The acting was good though. I particularly liked the performance of Kris McQuade as Mrs. Kelly. I;m giving it two stars cos of her and the acting and the cinematography. Otherwise, meh.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ned Kelly

5.0 out of 5 stars

5.0 out of 5 stars Le héros Australien

5.0 out of 5 stars Ned Kelly - Ein australischer Bandit und Rebell
5 Sterne

5.0 out of 5 stars Australia's Favourite Outlaw!
Brilliant film, Heath and Orlando were both great. I loved this Western style take on the story of Ned Kelly, Australia's favourite outlaw. Really recommend this film but will warn that they speak in quite thick Irish accents so can be hard to follow if you aren't used to the accent.
