For the first time ever, this documentary reveals the secrets of former Fox News producers, reporters, bookers, and writers who expose what it's like to work for Fox News. Outfoxed: Rupert Murdoch's War on Journalism uses the inflammatory tactics of the Fox News Channel to demonstrate the conservative bias that's handed down by Fox's owner, media mogul Rupert Murdoch. The documentary gathers interviews from media watchdogs and former Fox employees (including a former anchor, Jon Du Pre, who describes his flailing efforts to create a celebration for Reagan's birthday when the one he was sent to cover never materialized), but their overwhelming condemnation of Fox's skewed news practices isn't half as effective as footage taken directly from Fox itself--an appalling montage of pundit Bill O'Reilly telling guests to shut up; repeated efforts to paint Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry as weak and waffling, while President Bush is captured in respectful, reverent images; and management memos dictating language, subject matter, and point of view. Outfoxed is unlikely to persuade Fox News fans to change their views, but it may spur outraged liberals to take action. --Bret Fetzer

For the first time ever, this documentary reveals the secrets of Former Fox news producers, reporters, bookers and writers who expose what it's like to work for Fox News. These former Fox employees talk about how they were forced to push a "right-wing" point of view or risk their jobs. Some have even chosen to remain anonymous in order to protect their current livelihoods. As one employee said "There's no sense of integrity as far as having a line that can't be crossed."
"Outfoxed" examines how media empires, led by Rupert Murdoch's Fox News, have been running a "race to the bottom" in television news. This film provides an in-depth look at Fox News and the dangers of ever-enlarging corporations taking control of the public's right to know.
"Outfoxed" first examines media mogul Rupert Murdoch and the Australian company, News Corp., tracing how the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) helped Murdoch break the rules to establish a fourth network in the United States. The film explores Murdoch's burgeoning kingdom and the impact on society when a broad swath of media is controlled by one person.
Media experts, including Walter Cronkite, Jeff Cohen (FAIR), Bob McChesney and Chellie Pingree, provide context and guidance for the story of Fox News and its effect on society.
The team behind "Outfoxed" created a system to monitor Fox News 24 hours a day for months to discover exactly how its shows worked. A team of volunteers around the country scrutinized every hour of Fox News programming, noting examples of bias in its coverage. The result is an intense examination of Fox News and the lie inherent in its favorite motto: "Fair and Balanced."

- Reviewed in the United States on September 30, 2004"Outfoxed" clears away the smoke and reveals the "fair and balanced" motto of Fox News to be an outrageous sham. Early in this fast-paced and highly informative documentary produced and directed by the talented Robert Greenwald, Fox star commentator Neil Cavuto exclaims, " ... if, God forbid, John Kerry is elected president."
The Cavuto comment makes one laugh robustly at any "fair and balanced" claim in the wake of that revelation and much more, such as the harangues of rightist stalwarts such as Sean Hannity and Bill O'Reilly. It also tempts one to play the game of "if the shoe were on the other foot" regarding the right and Cavuto's statement.
What type of response would be generated by the right and, through the swift ripple effect, the entire media if Dan Rather were ever to state on CBS, " ... if, God forbid, George Bush is victorious in the presidential election"? How long would it take for the vigilante posse to be formed and the gallows to be erected in the center of town? This would be the most calamitous outrage since the uproar over Bill Clinton having extra-marital sex with an intern.
The documentary's informative value is enhanced by the appearance of ex-Fox employees explaining company policies. One former executive recalls fondly the good old days in the network's early period. Australian media mogul Rupert Murdoch gave his reporters and commentators the opportunity to function on their own without the intervening look over the shoulder from Big Brother.
That early period soon shifted abruptly to the pattern that has unfolded thereafter, one of Murdoch imposing his pronounced right wing views and the network becoming an adjunct of the Republican Party. Memos would be presented with talking points for the day established. Generally they would consist of either making a particular liberal Democrat look bad or the Bush White House look good, or both.
One sees that the view adopted by some of certain liberals being wimps and wilting under intense right wing heat is not the major factor where Fox is concerned; power lies with the microphone and blustery Bill O'Reilly is a classic example of taking advantage of corporate advantage. The lesson to be learned at Fox and elsewhere is that power resides with control of the microphone, and with it the network.
O'Reilly controls a tight mike. When he is pushed hard his voice notably rises and he becomes flustered. If the tide is not swiftly turned and his adversary continues to pummel the position he advocates the interview is terminated. A classic instance was when young Jeremy Glick, whose father worked for the New York Port Authority and died in the September 11 tragedy, appeared as a well-informed guest who had closely studied O'Reilly's interview pattern beforehand.
When a coolly confident Glick told O'Reilly what he thought about the Bush administration action of bombing Afghanistan in the manner that it did, killing peasants rather than terrorists, the blustery host began shouting and ultimately called for security guards to escort his guest out of his interview room. Glick explained that, after he went to obtain a cup of coffee in an anteroom a few feet away, concerned security guards asked him to leave for fear that O'Reilly might strike him and would be sent to jail.
Another Fox pattern was exposed in this illuminating documentary. When commentators receive their talking points they are instructed to repeat certain words as part of a mantra designed obviously to brainwash under the guise of providing information to viewers. The expression "some people are saying" is used as a preface for a leading comment, either supporting a Republican position or hammering Democrats. Over the course of time, according to the strategy, the sayings will stick and become imbedded thought patterns as well as perhaps part of that individual's lexicon.
"Outfoxed" reveals the dangers of corporate power immersed in the clutches of a Rupert Murdoch with the means of delivering propaganda broadcasts on behalf of the Republican right while operating under the pretense of "fair and balanced" coverage.
Also revealed is the episode from election night 2000 when George W. Bush's first cousin John Ellis declared the then Texas governor to be the winner. This launched a stampede of other news organizations, giving the Republicans the huge advantage of being perceived winners when the bitter Florida Recount battle began.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 21, 2004Sadly, it seems that anyone with a concientious objection to war, or people who want to know WHY we must kill tens of thousands of "brown" people, and WHO is making all the money from this venture: HAS HUDDLED TOGETHER AND CALLED THEMSELVES DEMOCRATS.
I'm no democrat, nor conservative nor WHATEVER. What I have a problem with; is PEOPLE LYING. ESPECIALLY THOSE TRUSTED TO "REPORT" THE NEWS, not CREATE IT as they see fit. Which FOX does EACH AND EVERY SINGLE DAY. Viewing any memo from someone named "MOODY" at FOX, will display the utter PATHOLOGICAL nature of their broadcasting. Sure, many people LOVE IT. It echoes all their beliefs that they acquired reading Newsweek, Time and (in some cases) listening to their pastor.
This is such an important documentary because it performs something called: "Investigative Journalism". Here me out; even if it is slanted against FOX (which obviously it is), the time taken to review and scrutinize thousands of hours of FOX News and then report the findings and it's impact on society is a valid investigative activity. Something extremely rare, I think we can all agree?
This documentary could have been better done, it is however really good and extremely important. I'm just glad somebody finally took the time to do this. The patterns are indeed, a little disturbing. Almost everyone can also agree, that they seem to be incredibly conservative, and utterly Pro-Bush. Doesn't this disturb anybody else?? We need alot more of these documentaries. It's not just FOX, though they are the only ones who have done it so well.
So, the video: It does an excellent job in interviewing former employees, many of whom remained anonymous due to the Confidentiality Agreements they signed with FOX, that bind them forever. And the repititious nature of their messages is basically highlighted, while past employees detail the way they were encouraged to do certain things, given the days message and script, who to attack and on what subjects, while other activities like investigative journalism into certain activities were condemned and sure to get you blackballed. Also talked about alot, is the disparity between the amount of liberals and conservatives interviewed, and their notoriety.
The outright lying is not as exposed as I would have liked. There are so many instances, so many days, when I yell at the TV: "That's NOT true and you know it!" They DO know it, they are rewarded based on a merit system that lauds certain behaviour (like Bill O'Reilly) and fires others, like Jon Du Pre because they simply reported it instead of glamourizing the so-called "Right".
There's no question, this is Important Journalism and EVERYONE should see it. And, if there IS a documentary about the VAST LIBERAL MEDIA CONSPIRACY, you should see that one too and then compare notes. That idea alone (it seems) has been totally forgotten (how many people watched F-heit 911 and THEN: F-HYPE 911??). Let's begin again, shall we??

5.0 out of 5 stars Review On Outfoxed
A bit of a back story first! On day I was in my local town and I bumped into a friend I hadn't seen in a while. and he mentioned Outfoxed saying how good it was and I really ought to see it. Anyway it set me thinking and I decided to borrow it from library,on the strength of his recommendation! Guess what the disc had gone missing after a loan and the library could not locate it.
That brings me to March 2011 and I decided to buy it on Amazon and I am really glad that I did. The version I purchased was non pal but that didn't matter as I have a multi-region player. where to start?? Its very interesting many facts about Rupert Murdoch I had not been aware of before. I like how the doumentary was set up and it gave me as a Brit a very insightful view on Fox News. And of course it is now highly topical as Murdoch has gained control of Sky, which affects us in Britain and will I suspect(unfortunately) affect the output of Sky in general. I have already noticed some of the channels just disappear.
But I digress! The extras alone make the Docu worth seeing. The Director/ Producer Robert Greenwald shows and tells in great detail the effort, made by just recording hour upon hour of Fox News alone , in bringing hours of footage.
And the result is compelling and disturbing . In actual fact more than disturbing as the film is giving the picture of a man who is bringing to the viewer an alarming amount of bias and partisan reporting of a right wing nature. And all notion of balnce and fairness appears to be out of the window.
I would reccomend this film very highly ! and to be aware of the ever increasing manipulation of the media. That is set to continue! Viewers be warned!!!

This an excellent film, it has exposed many things about the way Fox news operate that I was unaware of. The only downside for me was the cheesy graphics and music; but that is only a minor issue.
