With today's social media and inappropriate tv and movies published, we are glad to have Benji in our home!

- Reviewed in the United States on March 25, 2012Benji - Off the LeashI'm an adult with no small children at home any more. I always enjoyed the Benji movies years ago and wanted to give them to a friend's grandchildren. I also read reviews. I was surprised by the negative reviews and decided to re-watch this one in particular. Yep, I changed my mind. Even I flinched at the kicking and teared up over the sick dog - and I knew it was just a movie and wasn't real, AND I HAD WATCHED IT BEFORE. Small children should NOT watch this movie even with the parents sitting beside them. I would even caution parents of older children, maybe 10 and up (depending on the maturity level), to watch this with your older children and discuss this movie as it goes along. An older child may see what they could do to protect and prevent puppy mills, irresponsible owners and abuse in their communities. It's never too early to teach kindness to animals. Small children would be heart-broken by the plight of Benji, Scruffy and Daisy. It broke my heart to think of these precious animals having to be rescued. Thank you Joe Camp.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 30, 2004First of all I just want to say that I consider this to be a first class, five star, top notch
Family movie. I don't care what other critics say! I think that Joe Camp has done
an excellent job with sticking to his usual old fashioned ways of making movies.
Don't let those Hollywood fruits tempt you Joe. You continue to make your
Movies the way you do, and we will continue to watch and admire them.
That's as it should be!
"Benji off the Leash" is a good example of how the content of Family
movies need to be looked at. I'm pretty sure that "The Polar Express"
is too, but I'm going to go see it before I decide on that one.
Joe Camp has a good way of showing us that "Some things never change".
It's not necessary to always buy into every kind of new eccentric method
of movie and TV content that the world throws at us. It is why The Disney
Channel has thrown out their older programing and is going with more
current shows.
It would seem that some people don't consider this Benji film to have a
Happy ending. One of the reasons is because the boy doesn't keep the
Dog.
It is indeed a happy ending. It's just a different interpretation of a happy ending.
Kermit the Frog could have been happy living in the Swamp. Instead he decided
He would be happier to pursue Hollywood for a chance to make "Millions of People
Happy". At the end of this movie the boy decides it would be best for Benji to do
The same thing. I'd call that a better ending, as opposed to him just keeping the dog
(a typical ending for a boy and dog film). What a great unselfish act to convey to
the kids!
The Plot did jump around a little bit. That can be overlooked however, because
Everything else about the movie was good. Even though the story doesn't
present anything we haven't already seen, why should we let that bore us
to death. It's all about detail. Digging deeper than what's on the surface.
I Like how Joe used the ending to reflect the reality of what he has accomplished
With Benji. Benji really did make it big in movies. Most importantly he also
Traveled the world with Benji, and captured the hearts of Millions.
If that's not a good way to end it, then what is? Keeping the Dog? Joe knew
Better then to do that! He took a step further and showed us that a happy
Ending is not always done the way we might expect. The same thing is
True with our everyday lives.
That's the way I view it. Keep up the good work Joe!

4.0 out of 5 stars DATED BUT FUN CANINE CAPER
Produced as part of series of Benji stories by Joe Camp where a mutt is rescued from a pound or off the streets to become a ‘Benji’ in a film about the exploits that end up with him in the film - a sort of circular arrangement. Anyway in this one the Benji is born to a supposed pedigree bitch that’s the pride of a puppy farmer’s kennel. The puppy farmer concerned - Hatchett - has not only form when it comes to overbreeding dogs but also a citation regarding violence towards his wife and 14 year old son, Colby; Hatchett accuses the latter of stealing his prize breeder when he finds her with a litter of seemingly similar looking puppies - all except one - the future Benji. Hatchett kicks the dog away but Colby eventually rescues it and helps it reach adulthood and then rescue again the breeder - his mother - who ends up in the pound and is found to be seriously ill. A lot of fun is had leading to this end as ‘Benji’ is hindered along the way by another stray whose tongue is ‘the longest ever seen’ (not to my mind but I wouldn’t spoil the plot). An enjoyable romp.
