M. Night Shyamalan produces another masterpiece
I first watched The Village two years ago when I was twelve and loved it. I hadn't heard anything whatsoever about it before then, so I didn't have any expectations regarding the storyline. Contrary to what I believe most people expect prior to watching this film, The Village is not at all a horror film. It certainly isn't as scary as The Sixth Sense (which was Shyamalan's best work in my opinion), and in fact, isn't intensely scary. Aside from one prolonged very suspenseful scene about half an hour in, the movie moves slowly--but not in a bad way at all. I think the reason this film was frowned upon by critics was because they were expecting something this movie certainly is not. This is a drama about an isolated village in the middle of the woods, not a suspenseful horror movie. The Covington Wood surrounds a settlement in 1897, as depicted by a tombstone in the beginning of the film. Everything seems idyllic: There is no need for any currency; everyone is neighborly, and, aside from the fact that the film opens during the funeral of a seven-year-old boy, everyone seems happy and content. But the viewer soon discovers everything is not perfect. For in the woods lurk Those We Do Not Speak Of-- viewed as both horrible creatures and guardian protectors by the villagers. The elders of the village have established what they call a "truce": we do not go into their woods, and they do not come into our village. The 'bad' color, red, must never be visible, for it attracts them. And heed the warning bell, for they are coming. The movie brilliantly portrays the theme of oppression through fear and delivers an unexpected twist in the last five minutes. This is one of my favorite movies, and I hope this review changes the opinion of a would-be hater.

Almost any M. Night Shyamalan is worthy a viewing. When The Village first came out I skipped it in the theatre, but as soon as it was on video took a look and didn't like it. It was not my cup of tea. I found myself wondering why they had mixed timeframes in their clothing and setting and what in the world was going on... when I discovered "the twist" it made sense, but this was an M. Night Shyamalan film that was not grabbing me. I watched it again a few years later with my wife and came to it... not wanting to. But in the end, I found that I liked it upon a second viewing and feel like it's one of those films that not only need more than one pass, but is an "acquired taste." They're the ones that make you think while entertaining, but if you miss something or find you're out front of the story, you can't appreciate it on that first pass. With so much of M. Night Shyamalan's work, I feel like this can happen, and because of The Village, I've learned to give such movies a second pass, just in case.

Now I really like it, but it's just... that much off for me still.

The Village has some stellar performances from some of film's best actors. Here you'll find such talents as Joaquin Phoenix, Cherry Jones, Bryce Dallas Howard, Adrien Brody, Sigourney Weaver, and William Hurt. This group of people live in a small village where they are making a life for themselves despite the challenges that go with such a lifetime. These are the days of survival and how as a group they bind together to make it through. But survival from generally living is rivaled by the monsters that live in the woods surrounding the village. When tragedy strikes one of the villagers, their leader, Edward, chooses to send his daughter, Ivy, to find the medicine they need to save a life. Ivy is blind, but Edward knows she's the only one who can make it and the only one strong enough to try.

The twist is a good one and mind blowing. It's what won me over. The set up is thought provoking. the questions asked by these people are ones I'm sure many of us have asked ourselves over a lifetime. In the end The Village won me over and I acquired the taste for this film - enough to buy it from Amazon streaming to have in our home library.

I love, Shyamalan movies. they always have the most interesting twist interns, but out of all of them I think I was left most shocked by this one you think it's one thing and it's totally another thing as with most of his movies.
this one was really special to me. The main character is my name which is Ivey which is very uncommon. Also, my favorite actor Adrien Brody is in it he does an excellent job playing a schizophrenic man. Joaquin, Phoenix is excellent as well. I love the message. This movie sends if I say any more than that, it would be giving it away, and I do think it is one of those movies you will love to death or hate for the rest of your life. haha but to me, this is an absolute masterpiece. I've never seen any movie even closely resemble this one. It is so clever, and it really makes you think about humanity so many emotions and questions are stirred fear love hate curiosity the end ties it all neatly up neatly up in a bow.
like he is known for doing. watch this movie!!!
it's not what you think. I hate movies from like the 1800s and stuff like that. i almost quit watching the first time i saw it!! I actually have a huge poster of it in my home. I've seen it countless times, it's a gem that really got passed over in the theaters. very unique, thought out and orginal with GREAT acting by the entire cast! If you're looking for something very different, and you're bored of the same romcoms, slasher movies and action thrillers this is definitely for you. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

The more I watch it the more I still think it was a great movie the first time I saw it. But with the passage of time, you start seeing where the plot could've been better thought out, even though its definitely a great plot the first time you watch it. Only becomes a good to fairly good plot the more you watch it. But I always enjoy the heavy on the violin score. But come on, how can you really have enough money to buy-off the FAA? Seriously? Never a con trail? Never a blinking satellite or high flying jet at night?

A lot of people have commented on this film as being poor or bad or worse. I think from my point of view they've missed the point or they're upset they were duped into believing its a typical horror yarn. To be fair the trailer and some of the marketing that I saw when the film was at the cinema suggested it was a horror. But I think that was the idea.....M. Night Shyamalan wanted people to believe the premise that it was a horror, so there'd be little or no initial focus on the twists within the story, which as you know if you've seen the film, fundamentally change the aspect of the genre.

As I say, it is a twist-dependant film, which you may come to expect from Shyamalan, and to be fair, which I did. I expected there to be a twist or twists in the film, but what I never saw coming was what actually happened. The real test with a twist-dependant film is whether you can enjoy it as much watching it repeatedly. On this note, I have to say I have watched it a number of times and I'm not sick of it yet. Even that I know whats coming I find I can still engage with the human stories involved within this film. If its one thing Shyamalan does well is to build suspense and tension, which he does here to great effect. Enhancing the eerie-ness of the woods surrounding the village with haunting effects and music. Theres an almost palpable sense of fear among the villagers, even as they go about their daily routines, destroying or burying anything of the colour red, constantly vigilant against the ominous threat of 'those we dont speak of'.

Despite the horror/thriller premise of the film, its emotion that drives the story. In fact the story is moved foward solely by three characters; Lucius, Ivy and Noah. Lucius, a quiet, socially-awkward young man who 'is not fond of speaking'. Ivy, a cheerful, tom-boy who likes to play games, and is in fact, blind. Noah, a mentally disabled young man who likes to play games with Ivy, and seems blissfully unaware of the potential danger surrounding the village. Its the interactions between these characters that move the story onwards an eventually towards its conclusion. It is emotion that motivates the characters throughout the story.

The acting is superb for the most-part Bryce Dallas Howard is amazing as Ivy, in a very difficult debut role. Joaquin Phoenix and Adrien Brody are strong as Lucis and Noah. Also good turns from William Hurt, Brendan Gleeson and Sigourney Weaver hold the story up.

The music from James Newton Howard is simply beautiful and really adds something to the atmosphere and makes the emotions of the characters almost tangible. Hillary Hahn also does a lot of solo work throughout the work, with great skill and to great effect.

This will no doubt dissapoint those expecting an typical horror movie or a gore-fest. Although thats not to say the film is without moments of suspense, there are many, and they are handled very well. If you're like me and are much more afraid of what you don't see or see only glimpses of, then this may be a film for you. Well-written, well-acted, brilliant emotive music. Shyamalan spoils us with this film.
