Product Description
Nearing the age of 30 with no real accomplishments to show for his years, Jim (Casey Affleck) humbly returns to his small town and moves back in with his eccentric parents (Mary Kay Place and Seymour Cassell) and brother (Kevin Corrigan). As he tries to guide his family through the little dramas of everyday life, Jim stumbles into a romance with a kind, optimistic nurse (Liv Tyler). Directed by Steve Buscemi, Lonesome Jim is a wise, smart comedy about the courage it takes to accept the past, and to embrace the future.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 23, 2025It is a good story. I bought it for the director and actor. The director is actually one of my favorite actors and a good guy according to what I have read.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 7, 2018The movie is good. Kinda cheesy & lame but good.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 23, 2020This film really caught me by surprise. I borrowed it from the library, and totally expected it to be a throw away title - something to use as background noise and take a nap to. But this film turned out to be a true gem. Down to the last detail, every actor was carefully selected, every line in the script carefully written, and the direction was superb. I am the type of person who not only enjoys independent films, but I appreciate the details: Liv Tyler pointing out cartoon characters on a plastic cup with her son over dinner, the daughter steals a glance at Casey Affleck as he steals money from his mother's purse, Mary Kay Place unfazed by Casey's nudity as she "bothers" him while he's in the tub - all things done without little to no words that would be wasted in a big picture production. When the mom explains that the dad must not have known how bail bonds work, the camera cuts to his face, and we - as the audience, realize that he left her in jail on purpose, is truly heartbreaking (if you have a heart). This snuck up on me and became one of my all-time favorite movies!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 30, 2007Sadly, she isn't in enough scenes (in my opinion.) The lady underplays gently, sweetly, with that bemused smile that has you falling in love with her. The kid who plays her son does a nice enough job as well.
And the male lead? The woe-is-me character? Frankly, who hasn't felt this way at one time or another--still, there were times I almost felt like reaching out and b--ch-slapping this crybaby in order to get him to stop whining so much; and, oh yeah, you also felt like shoving a comb in his face and tossing some clean clothes his way. Not to mention a razor.
What's up with the uncombed hair, raggedy clothes look? What's up with the peach-fuzz look? I thought all that fake posing went out with the Miami Vice TV series years ago.
Whatever that facade/look/appearance is supposed to be--it comes across as nothing more than BOGUS and rather stupid--and we should put a moratorium on it for the next two decades, at least.
How about it, filmmakers?
SPOILER AHEAD:
Two or three things that were rather far-fetched: the Liv Tyler character jumping in the sack so quickly with this loser. There is no way he could have picked up a woman like this and jumped her bones ten minutes after meeting her. No way in hell.
Male lead's brother rams car into a tree (after male lead calls him a far bigger loser than he is).
Man, this sort of stuff is way too convenient--and I'm talking to the writer now.
Last one: the male lead's mother being thrown in jail for pushing dope (out of her factory). Seemed like a big stretch to me.
Spoiler--free zone.
I had a friend who could only watch this flick to about the half-way point. Just could not get into it.
In my case, as stated at the top: Liv Tyler not only makes it worthwhile, but also makes me want to see what else she has been in.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 25, 2020Why? Why do a movie like this? Find some quality about it (be the 1st!), but find it quickly because you're going be 'Gone in 60 seconds!', or there abouts. Don't even waste your time
- Reviewed in the United States on November 1, 2020Steve Buscemi directed this little known film starring Casey Affleck in his first lead role, Liv Tyler, and Mark Boone Junior (of Sons of Anarchy, and recently seen in The Mandalorian) who all give wonderful performances.
A genuine and heartfelt film in the style of the 90s indie films like Slacker and Clerks which first invigorated the genre, Lonesome Jim was shot on Mini-DV for just $500,000 and debuted at the 2005 Sundance festival where it was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize. The early digital low resolution is a little distracting, and it's unfortunate there is no way to upgrade the quality, but in some ways it adds to the film's charm. For indie film fans everywhere, this is definitely worth a watch.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 12, 2016Off-beat story for sure, but I like Casey A and Mary Kay P.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 19, 2017One reviewer said it had depressing looking sets. Apparently he's never been to Indiana which is where this entirely shot on location film was made. A movie about real people and their everyday lives. It has its sad moments just like real life and its surreally funny ones as well. The actors don't seem like their acting at all. Great cast makes it a must-see show!

5.0 out of 5 stars His Best
Personally I think this is JD at his best. The celebrity audience roar with laughter as JD tells it like it is. Love him or hate him, JD often says what we are all scared to say and for that I give him 5 stars for the bottle to do it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Walkin' the dog
Jim has been in the Big Apple, trying and failing to become a writer, walking people's dogs to make a little money, so reluctantly returns to the family home in Indiana, where his mother {Mary Kay Place, brilliant in a performance that should have been Oscar-nominated}, father {veteran Indy actor Seymour Cassel} and brother Tim {Kevin Corrigan} live somewhat dysfunctionally, his mom trying hard to please, his dad gruffly unsympathetic, and his brother suicidal.
He meets single mother Anika {Liv Tyler, sweetly excellent} in a bar, and works for the company run by his parents, while also trying and failing to train young kids at a local school to play basketball ~ cue some win/lose symbolism that director Steve Buscemi keeps from becoming too cutely obvious.
Casey Affleck plays Jim with just the right amount of dishevelled, downbeat slouchiness, and both his performance and the film's theme of a young man returning home to a find trauma and pain look forward to the more recent Manchester By The Sea, in which Affleck takes this sad, monosyllabic character to its logical extreme.
The soundtrack music is well chosen, and if little is groundbreaking, despite such sadness and defeatism on show through much of the movie, it ends up being a curiously uplifting experience, thanks to sure direction, and some subtle underplaying, particular by Affleck, Tyler, and the superb Mary Kay Place.
Well worth seeing at least once.

4.0 out of 5 stars mal was ganz anderes...
