Conversation with Harrison Ford and Director Richard Loncraine Firewall: Writing a Thriller Theatrical Trailer
Amazon.com
Harrrison Ford brings his reliable brand of focused intensity to Firewall, a family-in-peril thriller that fits Ford like a comfortable old sweater. The venerable action star is visibly growing older now, but he's got a quiet, simmering quality here that perfectly suits his role as Jack Stanfield, Vice President of security at a large Seattle bank that's recently upgraded to a state-of-the-art computer security system (resulting in conspicuous Dell product placement throughout the film). Jack's the only one who can safely crack the system, so he's targeted by a would-be robber (Paul Bettany) whose jittery crew of thugs and hackers kidnaps Jack's wife (Sideways star Virginia Madsen), daughter, and young son, threatening to kill them if Jack doesn't transfer $100 million into the robber's secret offshore account. Like Bruce Willis in 2005's Hostage, Ford rises above the film's familiar generic trappings, and British director Richard Loncraine maintains a low-key escalation of tension that keeps Firewall on track toward a routine but satisfying conclusion. Supporting roles for Alan Arkin, Robert Forster and Robert Patrick add little to the film's turnabout plotting, but fans of Mary Lynn Rajskub (better known as ace computer nerd "Chloe" on the hit series 24) will enjoy her performance here as a loyal secretary who factors into Stanfield's bid to outsmart his captors. Firewall may not be an instant Ford classic like The Fugitive, but it's comparable to Ford's 2000 thriller What Lies Beneath in terms of overall intelligence and crowd-pleasing suspense. --Jeff Shannon

- Reviewed in the United States on October 16, 2006As a computer network security engineer, I found Firewall one of the few films to depict network technologists as the competent, courageous, thoughtful, ingenious, and great-looking people they are in real life. Harrison Ford is a highly plausible network security specialist, and his work scenario is a realistic one: the security guru for a major corporation that suffers to see his well protected security infrastructure dismantled by a disinterested bean counter after the organization is bought by a larger company.
As bank IT expert Jack Stanfield, Ford faces all the challenges any network professional does day in and day out -- hacker attacks, equipment breakdowns, office politics, mergers and acquisitions, home invaders, and armed assault. Well, maybe not the last two.
The producer of Firewall strove for extreme technical accuracy. Unlike virtually every other movie depicting computers, the screens in Firewall don't beep with every character displayed, don't respond to silly commands like "solve problem," and don't have thousands of blinking lights. Every computer interaction is realistic, and screen close-ups actually make sense. In one early scene, Ford types an access control list into a Cisco PIX firewall, and what he types is legitimate Cisco code that would accomplish what his character says it would. Frankly, I've *never* seen that in any movie before.
There are some vigorous action sequences in the movie that portray a tad more physical activity than most of us experience during the workday. But that is the only flaw in this otherwise perfect rendering of the modern network guru. And for those skeptical about Ford's re-purposing of an iPod and fax machine into a screen scanner with attached storage, I ask "What? You haven't done that?"
- Reviewed in the United States on August 19, 2024This movie is a great thriller. It has a load of great actors - Harrison Ford, Paul Bettany, Alan Arkin, Robert Forster, Robert Patrick, etc. After a somewhat slow intro, it really gets moving. It grabs you emotionally because a man's family is in great danger, and his quest to save them is quite precarious.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 2, 2016Actually one of my favorite Harrison Ford movies, though it's not very well known. Ford plays a believably non-kick ass character that is sucked into a frightening scenario where he has to save his family. He's a tech guy who has to fight, and he does it very believably. He doesn't turn into an amazing fighter, but he does what he has to do to save his family. The suspense is very high--you'll be on the edge of your seat from beginning to end. The characters are very realistic and the acting is great. There's a little bit of humor added in, not much, but you'll smile time to time. One of my favorite all time movies, highly recommend. Also, the blu-ray quality is great.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 18, 2023In "Firewall" Harrison Ford brings his everyman charm to screen once again playing a husband and father who must bring out his heroic side to save his family. Ford plays the everyman perfectly and while this movie is not "The Fugitive" or his Jack Ryan movies and it is still a very good and fun movie. I know originally at the box office it was a a minor hit but sold and rented well on DVD. It is one of those movies that if you are a fan of Mr. Ford you should take another look at. Also enjoyed the performances of Robert Patrick, Virginia Masden, and Paul Bettany.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 27, 2008Firewall is an exciting, entertaining film if you just let yourself go and
immerse yourself into its plot without having to convince youself that its
believable, that anything is possible even though there is a one in 500 billion probability that something like this could happen. This is an identity theft genre film taken to the extreme. There are other films that deal with identity theft that are more believable, for instance The Net, starring Sandra Bullock. I'm naturally cynical, I suppose, but I kept asking myself, how could the bad guy in this film expect that he could possibly get away with this. This plot could have been more believable that if a terrorist group plotted to carry something out like this to fund their other terrorist operations rather than some greedy, murderous fiend who wanted to live a life of luxury on a South Sea Island. Other than that, there were enough elements that kept me interested enough to see it through to the end. However, I doubt that I would ever want to watch it again. Dan Casey

5.0 out of 5 stars PERCUTANT
