You'd have to be a heartless curmudgeon to dislike a movie as enjoyably sincere as Goal! The Dream Begins. Yes, the corny title tells you all you need to know about this rags-to-riches soccer tale, but like Hoosiers and Rudy, this conventional sports drama rises above its familiar plot with an engaging cast and some pleasant surprises along the way. The first in a proposed trilogy that will follow young Santiago Munez (Kuno Becker) as he rises to prominence in the competitive world of British soccer, this one begins by showing how Santiago, an undocumented immigrant in Los Angeles, attracts the attention of a talent scout (Stephen Dillane), who arranges a tryout for England's prestigious team, Newcastle United. It's rough going for a beleaguered trainee who suffers from asthma, but soon Santiago is befriended by a hard-partying soccer star (Alessandro Nivola) and he's on his way to reaching his Goal! It's all very inevitable, but director Danny Cannon makes the most of this inspiring story by exploiting the unexpected subtleties in an otherwise predictable screenplay: Santigo's relationship with his seemingly unsupportive father (Tony Plana) gains additional resonance as the story unfolds; a local nurse (Anna Friel) turns out to be more than a routine love interest; and Newcastle's German manager (Marcel Iures) is a wry, colorful character who works miracles with his unruly squad of players. Add some obligatory cameo appearances by real-life soccer stars including (of course) the great David Beckham, and you've got a modest, likable hit that delivers exactly what it promises, and a little bit more. --Jeff Shannon

- Reviewed in the United States on July 6, 2014This is a story about a dream. Santiago Munez grew up playing football or soccer in Mexico with his friends, scoring goals as the chickens tried to find some nourishment on the improvised pitch and road. That football (and a picture of the FIFA World Cup) are the two things he takes with him as his family desperately flees across the border to Los Angeles. There, his father starts a gardening business, buys a home, settles down and expects his sons to work with him to build up the business and take care of the family. And Santiago does his part. He works for his father, he works as a busboy at a Chinese restaurant, he makes sure his little brother does his homework… and every chance he get, he plays football. He is tremendously gifted and one day a former scout sees him play while on vacation in California and badgers the owner of Newcastle United to give him a trial should Santiago “show up on his doorstep.”
What follows is the story of a young man in the middle of a strange land, befriended by strangers, who in the end has to try to find it in himself to be good enough for his dream. For himself. It is a story told in England and in Los Angeles. A story about different kinds of love and forgiveness and family.
It is a very human story. And it made me cry.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 2, 2022Movie was exactly as described. It was hard to find the movie on a streaming service, so decided to simply just buy it on Blu-ray, instead of dvd, for better quality.
Movie is perfect for the family, or for a day to just stay at home and relax.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 24, 2013No, this is not Oscar caliber film making, but for a genre (sports) that frequently goes for the lowest common denominator, Goal! was a great find. You don't really need to be a soccer (futbol) fan to appreciate the story of an immigrant young man who works for his father's landscaping business before finding the opportunity to pursue his life long dream of becoming a pro soccer player. While the likeliness of this happening in real life would be almost non-existent, it is presented in a way that makes it feasible and don't insult your intelligence. If you are a soccer fan, particularly of the English game, you will enjoy some of the characters that were obviously modeled on some of the big names there, including cameos by Beckham, Zidane, Raul and Shearer. Also a great movie for adolescents on pursuing dreams and setting goals, my 13 year old, soccer mad son loved it.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 14, 2009Most sports movies fall into the "seen one you've seen them all category". Goal is a fairly typical sports movie story of an underdog who defies all the odds to make it big and even get the girl at the end. All the stereotypes are here. The loving grandmother, the tough father, the conceited superstar, the stern coach, the adoring younger brother. So given all that why did I enjoy this so much?
First Kuno Becker gives a fine performance in the lead role as a young Mexican immigrant in Los Angeles who is spotted playing park football and ends up in the English Premier League. Second- The film is unusual in the dual settings of Los Angeles and Newcastle, UK. Third- The football sequences are well done and feature cameos by numerous big name players and the depiction of game day at St Jame's park in Newcastle is incredibly cool.
Finally, for a soccer fan living in the LA area how can you not be drawn into a film that deals with both your hometown and your favorite sport.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ein Lupenreiner Hattrick !!!
Also Vorlage = "Kaufangebot" nutzen, sauber Abstauben = "Zugreifen"
