Product Description
A wild and wicked send-up of every musical biopic ever made, WALK HARD: THE DEWEY COX STORY is gut-busting proof that when it comes to hard rocking, living and laughing, a hard man is good to find.
Amazon.com
The Pixar-like roll of Judd Apatow (The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Knocked Up, Superbad) continues with another sure-fire hit. In charting the meteoric rise, catastrophic fall and Lazarus-like rise of rocker Dewey Cox, Walk Hard parodies the classic Hollywood bio-pic, cashing in mostly on Walk the Line. John C. Reilly, one of Hollywood's most solid character actors, makes the most of his Golden Globe-nominated star turn as Dewey, whose road to stardom is paved with a childhood tragedy that claims the life of his prodigiously talented brother ("The wrong kid died," is his father's mantra), instant stardom (his first record is a hit just 35 minutes after it was recorded), sex and drugs, and the inevitable "dark (effen) period" that leads him to rehab. Reilly gets solid backup from current and former Saturday Night Live alumni, including Kirsten Wiig as his incredibly fertile first wife who has no faith in his musical aspirations ("You're never going to make it," she cheerily ends one phone call); Tim Meadows, never better, as Dewey's drummer, who, in one of the film's best scenes, does a poor job of dissuading him from trying marijuana); and Chris Parnell as his bass player. Jenna Fischer leaves Pam back at The Office as Darlene, Dewey's virtuous duet partner. Hilarious cameos give Walk Hard a great "Hey!" factor: Hey, that's Frankie Muniz as Buddy Holly. Hey, that's "Kenneth" from 30 Rock. Hey, there's Jack Black and Paul Rudd as--no kidding--Paul McCartney and John Lennon revealing "a rift in the Beatles." Some of the jokes are obvious (come on; the guy's last name is Cox), others inspired. But the decades-spanning music, echoing the styles of gritty Johnny Cash, romantic Roy Orbison, obtuse Bob Dylan, trippy Brian Wilson, and even a bit of anachronistic punk rock, is as pitch perfect and affectionately observed as in The Rutles, This Is Spinal Tap and A Mighty Wind. Walk Hard earns its R-rating, particularly for a sure-to-be-talked-about scene of hotel-room debauchery. But: Hilarious? Outrageous? Twisted? To quote the title of one of Dewey's hit songs, "Guilty as Charged." --Donald Liebenson

- Reviewed in the United States on May 23, 2023"Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story" is a hilarious and underrated comedy that pays homage to the music biopic genre while expertly satirizing its tropes. Directed by Jake Kasdan and featuring a standout performance by John C. Reilly, this film delivers a clever mix of slapstick humor, witty writing, and catchy original songs. Here's why "Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story" deserves recognition as a comedy gem:
One of the film's greatest strengths lies in its brilliant comedic performances, with John C. Reilly at the helm. Reilly's portrayal of Dewey Cox is both uproarious and surprisingly heartfelt, as he fully embraces the exaggerated rock star persona. His commitment to the role, combined with his impeccable comedic timing, brings depth and likability to a character that is often the subject of parody.
The film's clever writing and sharp satire make it a standout comedy. It expertly lampoons the clichés and absurdities of the music biopic genre, with hilarious exaggerations and tongue-in-cheek references. The script is filled with witty one-liners, memorable punchlines, and clever wordplay that consistently land laughs. It takes familiar tropes and subverts them, creating a fresh and entertaining comedic experience.
In addition to its comedic prowess, "Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story" boasts a surprisingly catchy soundtrack. The original songs, performed by John C. Reilly himself, are humorous and cleverly written, parodying various musical styles and artists throughout the decades. The infectious tunes add another layer of entertainment to the film and showcase Reilly's musical talent.
The film's pacing keeps the laughs coming, with a steady stream of jokes and comedic set pieces. The comedic timing and comedic chemistry among the cast members contribute to the film's overall effectiveness. The supporting cast, including Jenna Fischer, Tim Meadows, and Kristen Wiig, deliver solid performances that complement Reilly's comedic prowess.
While "Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story" excels in its comedy and satire, it occasionally feels uneven in its storytelling. Some plot elements and characters could have been further developed to enhance the overall narrative cohesiveness. However, this minor drawback does not diminish the film's overall comedic impact.
In summary, "Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story" is a hilarious and underrated comedy that cleverly satirizes the music biopic genre. John C. Reilly's standout performance, along with the film's sharp writing and catchy soundtrack, make it an enjoyable and memorable experience. Despite a few narrative inconsistencies, this film showcases the comedic talent of its cast and the filmmakers' ability to deliver clever humor and memorable moments. "Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story" is a must-watch for comedy enthusiasts and fans of music biopics looking for a fresh and irreverent take on the genre.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 19, 2013This movie is just flat out hysterically funny. I'll start off by stating that I'm not the biggest fan of comedy but Judd Apatow seems to just get it right almost all the time from what of his I've watched. Except for Knocked up which was horrible, but that's another review. I usually find that movies like this while funny get littered with gags that are so stupid and out there that it just annoys me and drives me from it. This movie has only one seen that does that to me and thankfully it's in the very beginning.
The story of very small town southern boy Dewy Coxs' story of sucess, excess, low points, just the gambit of life in all it's tragic hilarity. The story spans from the very early days of Rock N' Roll to modern times when he's an old man. In many ways it most parodies Walk the Line which came out a few years before, but also takes a very hilarious spin on many extreme and outrageous events of rock n roll lore. Throwing in a number of unique events. A life's journey that is insanely funny in it's tragedy and also funny and even heartwarming when he is content and settled down. You can't help but fall in love with Dewy Cox. Faults and all.
The soundtrack is simply amazing. They really captured the essence of each decade the moment was set in. Capturing the mood, style, and movements that concerned each period. I was always a fan of John C Riley. This movie brought me a whole new level of respect and admiration. He truly sings all the songs himself and is very surprisingly talented. I just can't tell you how delightful this movie truly is. Just really captures all you could ask for a movie like this. Never a dull point in it. Just watch it yourself. 8 out of 5 stars for me.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 14, 2025If you don’t know the legend of Dewey Cox, I’d have to say you know nothing about music… He was like the Forrest Gump of musicians in his life and all the stories he lived to tell… And apparently all the countries slept, I mean travelled… You’ll just have to watch to find out what I’m saying…
The legend lives on in this classic story about the greatest musician of EVER…

5.0 out of 5 stars Ein Riesenspaß
The Temptations!"). Und bitte die Specials sehen, sie sind es wert.
