Warner Brothers' proprietary Ultra-Resolution process has brought new life to such classics as "The Wizard of Oz," "Gone With the Wind," Errol Flynn's "Robin Hood," and "Singin' in the Rain." By going back to the original three-strip technicolor negatives and realigning them digitally, the color and detail blows away anything that customers have seen in the past with home video. "An American In Paris" has now undergone the same process. For those that have a blu-ray player, be sure to order this version, An American in Paris [Blu-ray]. Here is a list of extras that are the same on both versions:

    Disc 1:
1.33:1 Full Screen with Original Mono audio * Tech Specs for Blu-ray version: Video is 1080P 1.33:1 * Audio is English, French, Spanish (Both Castilian and Latin), German and Italian DD1.0 * Subtitles (Main Feature): English, French, Spanish, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, German, Italian, Japanese, Norwegian, Portuguese, Swedish * Subtitles (on Select Bonus Material): English, French, Spanish, Dutch, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese
1938 MGM short: Paris on Parade
1951 MGM cartoon: Symphony in Slang
    Theatrical trailer

    Disc 2:

2002 American Masters Documentary: Gene Kelly: Anatomy of a Dancer (Gene Kelly - Anatomy of a Dancer)

`S Wonderful: The Making of An American in Paris, an all new documentary, produced especially for this release. A dynamic history of the making of the film, which reveals how George and Ira Gershwin's classic songs, the dazzling art of the French impressionists and the ultimate teamwork of MGM's legendary "Freed Unit" came together to create a musical masterpiece. Featuring ten new interviews, including co-stars Leslie Caron, Nina Foch, and Kelly's widow. A very enlightening piece; Caron's memories are probably the most interesting, with Foch running a close 2nd. Caron's comments about co-star Georges Guétary being handsome but not too bright seem to be echoed by Kelly's widow, who says Gene spent more time trying to teach him how to gracefully walk down a set of steps than on anything else in the film. It is unfortunate that Maurice Chevalier could not have taken that role as originally intended. You also realize just how revolutionary this movie was (artistically), especially because of the 17-minute ballet tacked on at the end of the movie. Even Irving Berlin disapproved during an on-set visit, which didn't help the confidence of Vincente Minnelli at all.

    Outtakes:
Georges Guetary performing Love Walked In (not missed in the movie at all!)

Audio Outtakes: Alternate Main Title, But Not for Me (Guetary), But Not for Me (Levant Piano Solo), Gershwin Prelude #3, I've Got a Crush on You, Nice Work if You Can Get It, 'S Wonderful

    Radio Interviews: Johnny Green, Gene Kelly, Gene Kelly & Leslie Caron;
Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron promotional radio interview with Dick Simmons

Not all of the original musical recording stems have survived over the years, preventing a true stereo/5.1 restoration of the soundtrack; instead, a restored mono version is being made available.

Most are familiar with the movie; storywise, it is a little creaky and hasn't necessarily survived well over the years: Kelly is an American artist living in Paris. He falls in love with a young girl (Leslie Caron) who is in a loveless relationship with one of his best friends (Guétary). Kelly is also in somewhat of a loveless relationship with his financial sponsor (Nina Foch). You can probably guess the rest.

The glowing color, fantastic music by Gershwin (arrangements by the talented Conrad Salinger), and the amazing choreography of Gene Kelly will keep this one a classic for years to come despite a predictable plot. Just the ending ballet alone is a masterpiece; the art of Toulouse Lautrec and Utrillo comes to life with Gene Kelly & Leslie Caron dancing their hearts out to some of the most imaginative choreography (Kelly's) in years. The Freed Unit at MGM was at their peak when this movie was made, and this is one of the last great ones that it created.

It is a real shame that with how fantastic the picture is (the colors literally leap off the screen, and it really adds to the appreciation of what an artistically beautiful visual feast this movie is) that the sound cannot match. Although it is clear and free of problems, the Gershwin music just begs for a 5.1 or 7.1 surround track; unfortunately, due to the age and availability of the original elements, this is not possible.

Yes, I know another re-release of one of the best ever movie musicals ever comes to Blu-ray. Is it worth the up grade from the 2 disc Special Edition with ULTRA RESOLUTION for the standard DVD. If you have it and you have an upconverting DVD player with HDMI and a HDTV your fine as is, in my opinion. BUT, if you are a Blu-ray HD Home Theater with HDMI and 5.1 Sound and you don't own "An American in Paris" this Blu-ray Version has it all. (that the 2 disc special edition has and more)

This was such a fantastic 1951 Musical it received 6 Oscars including "PICTURE OF THE YEAR" plus GENE KELLY received an additional honorary Oscar for his outstanding contribution to Hollywood Musicals to include Dance Choreography. The TECHNICOLOR is so vivid the costumes, sets and lighting are UNBELIEVABLE, the best eye candy. Even today it stands the test of time. The entire musical is based on the music of George Gershwin. FANTASTIC!!!

Before Cinemascope (est. 1953), this 1951 Standard Definition is wonderful. NOTE: the larger the Home Theater Screen (I have a 9 foot HD wall screen with 5.1 sound theater) the more spectacular this film really is!!! The films colaboration had ALL the great professionals assembled in 1951. Gene Kelly, Vincent Minelli, Arthur Freed, Alan Jay Lerner, Johnny Green, Saul Chaplin, Michael Fienstein, Preston Ames, Irene Sharaff, Oscar Levant to name a few of the main players. Believe me this film is an artists palette in motion with Gershwin music, 'S Wonderful!!!

This Blu-ray program includes the 1080p Standard Aspect Ratio (4:3) film.

Outstanding SPECIAL FEATURES included are; A 90 minute "Concerto Commentary" Hosted by Patricia Ward Kelly (Gene Kelly's widow) and featuring rare, previously unheard interviews with Gene Kelly, Vincente Minelli (the Director), Arthur Freed (Producer), Alan Jay Lerner, and a cast of film authoriies and stars Leslie Caron (this was here film debut at 18) and Nina Foch. (One of the best film commentaries I've heard) Also a NEW Documentary's 'S Wonderful: The Making of An American in Paris and About the Ground Breaking Creation of a Musical Classic in HD. Plus a 90 min Biographical film of the life of Gene Kelly "Anatomy of a Dancer" (Very Good and very informative). More Features include radio promotional interviews with Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron during 1951's film release tour. Movie Out takes, Trailers, Classic Cartoon and much more.

This is a must have Blu-ray copy of this Classic Musical Film. Great family entertainment with Great Gershwin Standards. Bring this classic to your Home Theater (the bigger the better) Enjoy!!

An American in Paris Blu-ray by David Welford

This at present is an American only release, but the good news is that it is region free. I purchased mine through Amazon/Caiman (£15 approx) and it arrived posted in the UK in six days from ordering. This disc have been given Warner's Ultra-Resolution restoration process with a crystal clear 1.33:1 VC-1 encode from the Technicolor original, that produces a beautiful image on the screen, with appealing saturated colours, with a depth and clarity that is at times almost three dimensional. The flesh tones are a bit on the red side, but I found overall the slight pastel painting appearance of the film appears like you feel a film of this period should look like. The soundtrack is mono, a restored DD mix which sounded clear and good on my system. I am sure you are all familiar with the plot, is very lightweight. Many critics have commented that is not one of the greatest of the MGM musicals and the ballet finale is overlong, but this sequence in this Blu-ray version is to me like an artistic masterpiece come to life. What of course half a century on makes the film a lot more interesting is the backcloth of the streets of Paris in the 1950's.

On this single disc there are plenty of excellent very enjoyable extras, mostly featuring Gene Kelly such as `Anatomy of a Dancer' (90mins), which focuses on, his career, and his undoubted contributions to the film world. I particularly liked `Paris on Parade' (9min) a vintage colour segment from FitzPatrick Traveltalks that focuses on the 1937 Paris exhibition.

These extras were not on the original DVD release, which I have and it does not stand up very well when compared to this release. I believe the extras are on the recently released superior two-disc Special Edition DVD, which I understand has the restored version of the film. Highly recommended release to those who have a Blu-ray player and like the film and enjoy escapist feel good films; was this the 1950's very own `Mamma Mia'!

I agree with the positive reviews for this 6 time Academy Award winning film; not only is the story interesting,
well acted and well directed, you also have the assurance of having 114 minutes of outstanding Gershwin's
highly acclaimed compositions; I'm a big fan George (and Ira) Gershwin's music; from popular to jazz to outright
Classical Masterpieces; and as a bonus, I received the 2 disc version which is not even advertised on these pages.
I've been a fan of Kelly and Gershwin since my childhood, I have most of his huge musical anthology and I'm very pleased

Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 12, 2009
I already had a copy of An American in Paris on DVD but without the extras included with this edition. So was I pleased with the extras? Yes, I think it brings out more aspects of Kelly's character which are often hidden - he must have been very difficult to work with part of the time. Stanley Donen's views on "It's Always Fair Weather" emphasises that aspect of Kelly. Turning to the film; it is difficult to disagree with Saul Chaplin on his troubles about re-arranging Gershwin's "American in Paris" suite to suit the film's ballet but surely he exaggerates? Overall, I think it is a great film and worthy of the Awards and Accolades it received. Leslie Caron makes a fine, enticing début in films and if Georges Guetary's voice grates sometimes, it is now difficult to think of anyone else in the part. So what about Kelly's choreography and dancing; surely this is a real pinnacle in his career and has been said we are lucky that he, Fred Astaire, Cyd Charisse, Leslie Caron, Vera-Ellen, the incomparable Judy Garland, Michael Kidd, Howard Keel, etc. were around with Arthur Freed, Jack Cummings, Stanley Donen, Charles Walters, Vincente Minnelli, Roger Edens, Conrad Salinger and Saul Chaplin when MGM had the money to make so many glorious, timeless musicals
