The blues at the party with Strannix's Live Band are missing, Main Theme is great but all in all this soundtrack CD seems a bit short in length. It would have been also nice to include bits of the voices of the movie's main characters in the mix, from the real-movie scenes, like in the Vangelis Blade Runner soundtrack. (Moreover with Tommy Lee Jones, Garey Busey and Steve Seagal unique voice tones, **specially Seagal's)
Do NOT come to this album expecting the incredible orchestral fury or maximum sense of adventure that Poledouris' score to Under Siege 2: Dark Territory is famous for. Gary Chang's score to the first movie pushes minimalism to its zenith to the point where this is almost a blank CD.
I never really liked Under Siege, honestly. It had a lot of hype when it first came out but I was bored by the bland interiors of the battleship, the utter lack of atmosphere in the large, black backdrop as it sat in the middle of the ocean, and by the "score" which is so sparse it becomes borderline irrelevant. The huge thrills, stunts, and non-stop excitement of Under Siege 2 are unique to that film only. The original is full of quiet creeping around and small-scale hand-to-hand combat fights that are over as soon as they begin (much like this album). How does one score a movie like that? I guess a more imaginative composer could work with such bland visual inspiration but Chang has churned out a score that will barely register on any graphic equaliser with barely a hint of themes or a melody. At least half of this score is actually just sound design and nothing worthy of an album release.
The album itself is less than 30 minutes long, but you can expand it to about 33 if you download a couple of extra tracks from Chang's own website. I'm listening to it right now and I can't believe I'm almost at the end already. I feel like I was only on track 1 a few minutes ago.
