This is the soundtrack based upon the movie "How the West was Won". I got this to replace a lost edition.

This is a two CD set, and has a booklet about making the movie included. Debbie Reynolds voice stands out in the songs she performed. And, those familiar with the movie will recognize voices of the cast appearing in important scenes. During the first part of the movie where the family is waiting at the Erie Canal, Karl Malden's voice is clearly heard prominently on the CD, as it is in the movie.

If you are a fan of the movie, and many of the folksongs of the era, this is a good pick.

I was satisfied for years with the single disc version of this soundtrack which was a copy of the 1963 LP that I played to death for years after seeing the film in its first run. But the last two decades, despite being "the end of the CD era", have seen some amazing soundtrack releases, mostly the actual soundtracks complete for the first time. You have to remember that most of the original soundtrack LP's were not the actual soundtracks at all but were re-recordings, usually with the composer conducting a smaller studio orchestra (which saved money). The labels did not want to release 2-LP sets which would be necessary in the era of thirty-five minute albums to cover complete soundtracks. The many small and sometimes repetitious cues would confuse a pop audience, so only longer tracks were used, or else suites or four minute tracks were put together by the composers for the album. In any case what you got was a reasonable memento of the film but not the real soundtrack. It dawned on me that this was one of the greatest of soundtrack recordings and that I'd better get it while it is still around. I'm extremely happy that I did.

If I could give this six stars I would. This is one of those Turner Classics/Rhino productions, and they do everything right. Rhino is Warner's label for older material, usually rock-pop oldies, but they have the engineers, equipment and experience to know how to remaster the sound perfectly. And this they did. Everything sounds perfectly clear and balanced without any distortion in the loud passages. The single CD version had a boomy acoustic by comparison; this remastering preserves the warmth of the music, and warmth and expressiveness were two major characteristics of Newman's music. The CD package is glorious, with color movie stills under the discs and full information on every track. The 47-page booklet is everything you could want to know about the film, the actors, the composer, the production of the CD, a full track-by-track discussion of the music. It's illustrated with numerous photos including the cast principals, film storyboards, costume designs and scenes from the film. These are necessarily small, considering the size of booklets, but valuable. The entire presentation is ultra-deluxe. These Turner-Rhino CD's are, I suspect, made as a historical reference as much as a consumer item.

The booklet somewhat answered a long-time question of mine, which was " How did Alfred Newman get picked to do the score?" Newman was not the person one thought of with Westerns (and How the west Was Won is a Western overall, even if in the beginning the West is Ohio). Alfred Newman was the composer most associated with religious films like The Song of Bernadette or The Robe. Of course he was as versatile as any of the great Hollywood composers, but he rarerly did Westerns: there was The Bravados in 1958, but its music was dramatic without sounding Western in particular. Before that there was Drums Along the Mohawk, a Henry Fonda film from 1939. The booklet explains that Dimitri Tiomkin, a composer of many noted Western scores was originally chosen but had to withdraw for health reasons. It doesn't say exactly how they arrived at Newman, but music like Elmer Bernstein had written for The Magnificent Seven was not as well-known yet as it came to be and would have only worked for the farther-western segments.

Newman ended up being the wisest choice possible and he came up with a score that is consistently listed among the greatest ever. His versatility paid off. He wrote consistently in his own developed style and except for the open fifths that underscored the Spencer Tracy narrative segments, did not borrow much from Copland. With a sprawling picture like this it was important not to get lost in too many themes. He wrote a memorable principal theme that appears throughout in many guises. It's remarkably versatile and can be anything from a rousing anthem to a lament and many other moods in-between. Newman was especially noted for the way he used his string section. He had a way of writing for strings, particularly in their higher register that was expressive and full of feeling in a way no other composer did. This is done in the conducting as well as the notes on the paper, and Newman was a fantastic conductor. It's well-evident in tracks like come Share My Life, No Goodbye and Climb a Higher Hill. He doesn't depend on folk material but uses it here and there. When Johnny Comes Marching Home is appropriate to the Civil War section and the familiarity of Greensleeves is welcome whenever it appears. When necessary, he and his talented choirmaster Ken Darby, made up their own folk music like I'm Bound For the Promised Land.

Besides Darby's excellent mixed chorus there are songs by the Whiskeyhill Quartet, a group founded by the Kingston Trio's Dave Guard to perform folk material in a less slick and pop way than his Trio did. The original idea of actually using the Kingston Trio would, especially now, seem like an anachronistic interruption of the 1960's into the 1860's. It was a wise decision. Debbie Reynolds sings three songs. If you know the film they definitely fit right in but those who don't might not understand why they're here. The score heard in its complete form is a marvel. Even the short cues, less than a minute, which can seem disruptive on many complete soundtracks, fit seamlessly into the whole. It's a very organic film score where all the parts are related. What you pick up the most from this complete score presentation compared to the old version is the epic scope of the picture. There's so much music that was necessarily left out of the old album that its inclusion expands the listening experience enormously.

There are even bonus tracks, mostly some alternate takes of songs from the film. Here I think they could have added something else. Though I enjoy hearing the underscoring of the Spencer Tracy parts and though I admit I usually skipped them when listening to the single disc version, they could have been included here as bonus tracks. Tracy's voice was an integral part of the film experience and to not have it at all is disappointing. Except for that this two-disc complete score is perfection.

What a marvelous thing to finally get a complete soundtrack of the music from this epic motion picture. For those of you who did not see the original Cinerama production, it was breathtaking to say the least. The music of Americana by Alfred Newman was one of the best parts of this movie. An Academy Award nominee, I don't even remember the movie music who won that year, 1963, but but it has since melted into oblivion while this soundtrack, thanks to the double cd set, and the blu-ray presentation, lives on.. The "original soundtrack album" which was released by the MGM label on lp records at the time of the movies release, did not do this score justice. The main title sequence was only half of what is recorded here, the intermission music didn't even have the solo, and the exit music was nowhere to be found. But don't take my word for this, go back and listen and compare both. You'll see there is no comparison. It wasn't until the movie was shown on the teevee in pan and scan, I realized how much of the main title was missing. Now the movie is in glorious smilebox and stereophonic sound, as close to the original theater experience as possible nowadays. Of course there is still nothing like seeing the movie in its original Cinerama presentation and if you get a chance, do so. This movie was also a milestone as it was the last movie presented in the 3-strip Cinerama process. What a pity they are not making any more of them. So sit back, turn the stereo up a notch or two, and enjoy this presentation.

Of a variety of versions of this sound track, this has the best sound. I have two other CDs that sound similar, if not identical, to each other, and both are thin sounding in comparison to this offering. A bonus, or minus if you are looking for an abridged version, is that this has the complete, original soundtrack music. Also included is a 16 page booklet with information on the movie, the recording, the people involved in the making, and the performing groups.
