The Star Wars cycle, George Lucas's stellar pop parable cum merchandising blitzkrieg, has long since made history as an unparalleled cinematic-cultural-marketing phenomena; somewhere Billy Jack should be in one envious, ass-kickin' mood. Phantom Menace, easily the most eagerly anticipated film of the '90s, returns to the saga's roots and allows Lucas to flesh out the history of some of the fable's core characters and conjure up a dazzling new cast of cohorts, antagonists, and alien realms for them to interact with and in. Thus, all composer John Williams had to do was essentially reinvent the world's most popular wheel. The film-scoring legend has admirably risen to that daunting challenge, delivering an inventive score whose dynamics should surprise and delight even the most ardent SW fanatic. The Main Title and a few oh-so-sparing bars of a familiar Jedi theme are all that remains from the original trilogy's lexicon, Williams having evolved the saga's musical language, stylistic reach, and orchestral palette with masterful subtlety. The composer's most ambitious surprise is the welcome addition of strong choral elements, which he uses in ways both majestic ("Duel of the Fates") and menacing ("Passage Through the Planet's Core"). And though the film revolves around a young boy (Anakin Skywalker, who will grow to be both corrupted and redeemed as Darth Vader), the only flirtation with cloying sentimentality comes with the innocently loping "Jar Jar's Introduction." In the tradition of the Cantina and Max Rebo's Band of the previous trilogy, Williams and Lucas close out this musical installment with "Augie's Municipal Band," a Carnivale-esque romp that segues grandly into the composer's swelling title music. Williams may be the master of a grand scoring tradition, but Phantom Menace is gratifying evidence that he seldom plays it safe--even when the Force is with him. --Jerry McCulley

- Reviewed in the United States on December 27, 2001This is it! The soundtrack that started it all. This was the soundtrack that made music an important aspect of Hollywood filmmaking. John Williams wrote very good themes for this movie and he used his themes better than any other film composer ever has. He plays the themes for the characters in many variations to suit what the characters are going through. As you listen to these themes in different variations, it doesn't even feel like it is basically the same melody that you are listening to -- this is clearly the work of a master. Great music for the action scenes. Excellent work overall. I love the entire CD. Can't complain about anything. This is great music superbly performed by the London Symphony Orchestra who went on to perform the other Star Wars scores as well as many other Williams scores.
After so many years of not writing any Star Wars music John Williams returns to do his work, this time using choruses better than any other film composer ever has. This soundtrack alone makes all of the choral work of James Horner look like rubbish (and Horner does choral work in ALL of his albums!!). And I thought John Williams' age means that his work will start getting weak. God was I wrong! This is better than any of the music in the original trilogy. Each track has a lot of new music in it and shows that this man JOHN WILLIAMS is a genius. This is great.
John Williams wrote A LOT of music for this album, enough music for five films. There are so many different melodies.
Really great! JOHN WILLIAMS RULES!!

- Reviewed in the United States on May 10, 2018I am grateful for this release. The artwork and "mini poster" are nothing special (I'm surprised that's one of this remaster's selling points), but the sound is certainly an improvement overall. The most notable difference between this remaster and the original album can be found in "Augie's Great Municipal Band and End Credits." In the original, the children's choir usually seems to be in the foreground with instrumentals being shoved primarily into the background, but in the remaster it's much more dynamic. Overall, the music sound a bit clearer or more precise, which is enjoyable. Worth the money to me.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 21, 2013When "Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace" was released so many years ago (well over a decade now), the majority of filmgoers and Star Wars fans berated the film for being too drawn out and dull for all of its political jabber, the weak acting/writing/direction/effects/whatever you hated about the film, and the swift entry and exit of Darth Maul. I was one of those people, but with both age and time I have grown to really enjoy this chapter in the Star Wars saga.
The one thing that I heard no one complain about was the music. Of course, composer John Williams probably trashes soundtrack ideas that are ten times better than most other soundtrack music thats produced these days, so it is no surprise that TPM's soundtrack was excellent.
I decided to purchase this disc hoping to add the music to my Star Wars collection. The music contained on the disc is brilliant, but it is not the complete soundtrack. Heck, it doesn't even include the 20th Century Fox fanfare that begins every Star Wars film (until now, since I'm sure Disney has a little something to say about that). Now I do understand that there is an Ultimate Edition available that includes the entire soundtrack, but if you can look beyond the tracks that are missing here, you'll find that this album is sufficient for filling the Star Wars music hole in your life.
My favorite tracks are "Duel of the Fates" and "Augie's Municipal Band and End Credits." Yep, I'm one of those people who actually enjoyed the Gungan marching band music that ended the film!
Overall, a decent purchase, but if you are a completionist, go for the Ultimate Edition.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 5, 2018I guess the point is whether customers and fans are willing to invest in yet another reissue of this fabulous music. To that effect, I wore my earphones and listened. My conclusion: if this whole series sounds like this, I am engaged. The sound is simply spectacular. Rich, powerful, marvelously played. And the investment is reasonable. I am in.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 9, 2015It is SO COOL.I love the music.I love the poster.Oh,if you don't know, it comes with a poster, and it's great.I highly recommend it.And another thing it came before it said it would. In a good way though,it said it would come May 16,but it came May 13.I was so happy when I got I listened to it all day!.Amazon is a really good company. They know most of the time what the costumers want.So I hope you order it.You'll LOVE it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Il Maestro non tradisce mai
"La minaccia fantasma", il film che riportò al cinema la magia di Star Wars dopo 16 lunghi anni. E l'attesa fu ampiamente ripagata, almeno dal punto di vista musicale: la colonna sonora di John Williams è semplicemente sublime, e ci conferma come il Maestro sia uno che non tradisce veramente mai, soprattutto quando le aspettative sono molto alte. Un pezzo da collezione che farà felice ogni amante della saga di George Lucas, e non solo.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wichtiger Teil der Star Wars Saga

5.0 out of 5 stars You can never go wrong with the great John Williams. Also yipee for Amazon Prime! :)
I already have the 2-disc Ultimate Edition of the soundtrack, but it doesn't have the track 'Duel of the Fates' as it is presented on this first edition 1-disc soundtrack.
In fact all the tracks on here are isolated and do not 'bleed into' the next track like the 2 disc version does. I am not being negative about the Ultimate Edition soundtrack by any means; it's just nice to have both versions of the CD soundtracks now.
It came next day as promised by Amazon Prime - which I am severely tempted to keep; even though I already have other subscriptions like Netflix. Nevertheless, one can do more with Amazon Prime.
The disc came sealed and brand new; it's a great addition to my collection. I have all 9 Skywalker Saga soundtracks and, as mentioned above, two versions of The Phantom Menace - which is very neat.
John Williams best work on the prequels is arguably Duel of the Fates. The guy is a legend. Two thumbs way up!
