My Rambo collection is finally complete! There are just some soundtracks that I find myself playing more than others and music from the Rambo movies is certainly one of those. Jerry Goldsmith created so many memorable themes in his career and the ones found in the Rambo soundtracks have always been some of my favorites. Unfortunately, the only copy I had of the Rambo movie soundtracks was "First Blood" produced by Varese Sarabande in 2000. It contains only a fraction of the complete score and although I played the heck out of it, I always felt like I was missing so much great music. I ended up finally getting "First Blood" and "Rambo III" produced by Intrada Records and "First Blood Pt. II" and "Rambo" (Brian Tyler) produced by Silva Screen Records. These seem to be the best made copies of these scores that are available now.

This particular score is probably my favorite of the four. It is during this time in Goldsmith's career that he is tinkering with electronic syth sounds in his scores and he does such a masterful job of blending this "new sound" with a large orchestra. His marriage of this new technology to the classic sound of the orchestra truly gave Rambo an iconic sound that fits the character and the age in which these films were created. Goldsmith's themes developed for these films were so great that I think that even playing them on a banjo would of been just fine however! This Silva Screen Records release is an expanded edition of the original soundtrack which contains previously unreleased tracks like "The Map" (track 2), "The Pirates" (track 6), "The Camp/Forced Entry" (track 8), "River Crash/The Gunboat" (track 10), "Bring Him Up/The Eyes" (track 12), and "Village Raid/Helicopter Flight" (track 18).

Silva Screen Records has also included an 8 page insert that basically takes each track and describes the scene in which it was created for. There are a few photos from the film and a brief description of their attempt to squeeze the best possible sound out of the original source tapes in which this was taken. They say that despite being recorded in 1985, some tape hiss and distortion occurs. They also go on to say that some of the tapes had to go through a "slow oven bake" process to restore the tape. That sounds really weird and I have no idea what that means but I am just thankful that they took the time to produce a really great sound and rescue these scores from total destruction. It would be awful to lose wonderful music like this!

This particular release was manufactured in 1999 and still seems to be pretty easy to find for now. There are 21 tracks on the disc with a little over an hour running time. The last track the vocal track "Peace in our Life" sung by Frank Stallone. If you are looking to build or add on to your Rambo soundtrack collection, then I highly recommend adding this one!

Goldsmith is clearly at the absolute pinnacle of his genius, the top of his game, a man on fire, a master in his heydey here! He adds a delightfully nasty, turgid synthesizer sound to his already great "It's a Long Road" theme from First Blood, to account for Stallone's increasingly cut physique and his character
Rambo's increasingly nasty demeanor when pushed. In this film, in this second chapter of the Rambo saga, John Rambo embraces the killing machine that he is, a warrior in his prime, doing what he was born to do, dispatching enemy personnel, as quickly and efficiently as possible. It was only natural that an electronic instrument, the synthesizer, would be used to sonically illustrate the mechanical nature of Rambo's killing skills.

Along with the "It's a Long Road" theme from First Blood, we are treated, right away, in Track 1, to a new "hero" theme. This is one of the greatest themes for a hero ever written, and will positively make you cheer! It's right up there with Goldsmith's own theme for Patton and John Williams' hero themes for Luke Skywalker, Superman and Indiana Jones!

This expanded edition features ALMOST every note of music heard in the film. There's all of the Asian instrument-flavored Viet Cong theme. There's all of the incidental music when Rambo and his female colleague Co infiltrate the POW camp. There's all of the Russians' declamatory brass, particularly when Brodovsky first steps off his helicopter and orders Rambo brought up out of the pig poop. There's the stinging sound with creepy low strings when Brodovsky orders his thug sidekick Yushin to put a knife in a POW's eye. Best of all, there's that wonderful 2/4-time, single-note motif, with strings and military snare-drum, increasingly layered with frenzied horns, when Rambo returns to the Vietnamese camp in the Bell Huey helicopter he captured from the Russians and unleashes a barrage of all unholy hell with a seemingly endless supply of missiles and machine gun bullets.

Only one small but important musical ommission prevents this from being a complete note-for-note presentation of the score:

Track 19-Home Flight: This track SHOULD begin, like in the film, with a slow burn, with that now-trademark turgid Rambo synthesizer sound, after Rambo has obliterated Brododovsky with RPG through the windshield of the Huey helicopter and looks back at his rescued POWs, one of whom has been shot and is bleeding badly, before flipping the Huey's switches and taking off. On this CD, Track 19 simply begins with a cymbal clash and the strings and brass of the "It's a Long Road" theme when Rambo takes off.

Since there is plenty of space left on this CD, I can only surmise that this CD's producers felt that including this slow burn disrupted the "action" flow of the music. I won't detract a star just for that. This CD is outstanding, even better than the already excellent original Varese Sarabande release! Jerry Goldsmith's powerful, patriotic score will make you proud of the American soldier!
