- Reviewed in the United States on June 23, 2020If you watched the movie than you will enjoy this CD...One of the best movie bands that never was besides Spinal Tap.
Some of the songs were done by the band Steelheart with Zak Wyld playing guitar with them and ironically Zak was one of the guitarist in the movie band too...
The actual singer in the band Steelheart also had a cameo appearance in the film...He was the guy getting out of the clear sound room just before Mark Warburg’s character audition for the band in their studio in the movie...
Well put together story and oddly when this movie came out my brother kept telling me I had to see it because at the time I was in a band and trying to figure out what I wanted to do in my life...
Anyway it took years later for me to finely watch the film after buying it on DVD...I was blown away by the story and really wished I listen to my brother and watched it sooner...
I like the choice of music that was used by Motley Crue and Bon Jovi it went along with the hair band scene they were going after when they produced the film...
Mark Walburg did a very convincing job at lip syncing in the movie but it was the last guy who took the torch from him that should have been used for the movie...He is the real deal and I love his work in the band Alterbridge and also playing with SLASH...
- Reviewed in the United States on November 19, 2023First of all, props to the seller because the album was packaged well and arrived in one piece (no scratches). Second of all, the music is reminiscent of '80s hair metal, which I love. The Steel Dragon songs are really good, especially "Wasted Generation," which has an insanely catchy chorus. The soundtrack also has tracks from Ted Nugent, Mötley Crüe, Bon Jovi, and Kiss!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 6, 2011The movie is about a fictional 80's metal band called "Steel Dragon". In that sense, it's a little like Spinal Tap. But whereas Spinal Tap is a mockumentary, this is not a comedy. There are funny parts in the movie, but it's situational, not mocking in intent.
They enlisted the real deal from that era of rock to help in creating an authentic approach to the songs and the visuals of the movie itself. Members from Slaughter, Dokken, Zakk Wylde, Black Label Society, Bonham, Marilyn Manson, Sammy Haggar, Steelheart, and Journey collaborate with the writing and/or performance in the songs and movie.
On the soundtrack itself, I LOVE the Steel Dragon original tracks. I wish there were more. In fact, in the movie, they start another song for the last band album, which does **NOT** make it onto the soundtrack, to my dismay. It sounded like the full song would rock yer sox off.
There are six Steel Dragon cuts on the disc, more than worth it, in my opinion: "Living the Life", "We All Die Young", "Blood Pollution", "Stand Up", "Wasted Generation", and "Long Live Rock n Roll". They all rock!
I also liked the Everclear song on the album. The other stuff I had most of anyway (Bon Jovi, Motley, etc.)
I wish they were a real band the way that Spinal Tap kept recording after the movie. It would be sweet to have more than just six Steel Dragon songs in my collection.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 16, 2003This is an absolutely fantastic soundtrack, with the only flaw being in the sequence of the songs.
First - The Music:
All of the Steel Dragon songs absolutely rock! The songs capture the essence of the 80's hard rock scene and are just as authentic and feel just as relevant to the time period as Stillwater and Spinal Tap did for their respective films. The Steel Dragon lineup includes drummer Jason Bonham, bassist Jeff Pilson, guitarist Zakk Wylde, and vocalists Mike Matijevic of Steelhart and Jeff Scott Soto of Yngwie Malmsteen fame. All of the Steel Dragon songs take you right back to a time where simple riffs and screeching vocals had your heart racing faster than a freight train. Aside from the Steel Dragon tunes, the album is rounded out by many other 80's hair-band favorites including Bon Jovi, Motley Crue, and Kiss. There's even a nice short piece by Trevor Rabin who composed the film score, but is also an 80's mainstay in his own right, having penned almost all of the hits from the Yes resurgence album 90125 (released in 1983).
Now - The Sequence:
The soundtrack follows the sequence of the film. And because of this, we are taken back and forth between very relevant Steel Dragon songs and very out-of-place tunes such as "Devil Inside" by INXS and "Stranglehold" by Ted Nugent (which, at just over 8:00, is altogeher too long to be included on this album). Clearly, they should have grouped all of the Steel Dragon songs together so that the listener could truly appreciate this fantastic band. In fact, I think it would have been a five star album if they expanded the library of songs by Steel Dragon, ended the album with the excellent Verve Pipe rendition of "Colorful", and tossed everything else. That way, the album still would have flowed in sequence with the movie, but all of the extra distractions would have been removed.
As it is, this is a terrific soundtrack, so don't let me nitpick it too much! With just a little tweaking, it could have been perfect. But, even still, this is well worth the price and is a must-have for any fans of good old 80's rock and roll.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 3, 2022I love the music, some people collect coins, some people collect stamps, I collect songs and music. God played a cruel joke on me. He gave me a great love of music, no talent! I can play a mean stereo, tho. If you're a movie buff or a lover of music i strongly recommand this sound track.
