Product description

Score by David Lynch and Angelo Badalamenti to the new David Lynch film.

Amazon.com

Director David Lynch's affection for kitschy lounge music and emotionally overwrought mid-century pop has long since proven to be more than trend or irony; indeed, it's often the uneasy spiritual axis of his films. The soundtrack of Mulholland Dr. turns on the usual Lynchian motifs (the brooding atmosphere of Angelo Badalamenti's ominous synth-and-orchestra cues tossed with a dash of Lynch's own off-center compositions), yet manages to evoke a sense of foreboding that's distinctly its own. Badalamenti leads off with a curve, the nervous orchestra swing-romp "Jitterbug," before descending into a dark soundscape that becomes murkier and more avant-goth at every turn. Bubbling through that morass are pop nuggets variously cheesy (Dave Cavanaugh's lounge-ready "The Beast"), lugubriously bluesy (Sonny Boy Williamson's take on Willie Dixon's "Bring It On Home"), and alternately innocent ("I've Told Every Little Star") and liturgical ("Llorando"). Three tracks of the director's own (cowritten with John Neff) skulking Lounge Music from Hell ratchet up the tension even further; it's the perfect garnish for this darkly delicious film-music cocktail. --Jerry McCulley

I promise you, if you are any bit a fan of David Lynch's films and music, and Angelo Badalamenti's compositions, you will not only be NOT disappointed by this CD, you will be sorry if you miss out on it. I admit I've only just received the CD in the mail today, and am still going through the songs, but already I'm mesmerized. Not just hooked, but in an almost trance-like state. This soundtrack is easily the most perfect compilation of Lynch and Badalamenti's stuff. On most CDs you'll hear some great tracks and some not-so-great tracks, but this CD doesn't let up until the very end. I must repeat -- you will SO not be disappointed if you buy this. It'll put you in a pleasurable mood more effectively and easily and efficiently than any drug you can get your hands on. I swear to it. I am so happy right now. This CD is genuinely nourishment for the musical soul.

Even many die-hard David Lynch fans don't know what to make of MULHOLLAND DR, which may well be Lynch's most deceptive film, which has provoked both praise and condemnation. Not surprisingly, the soundtrack is much the same.

A number of selections--"Pretty 50s," "Diane and Camilla," and the haunting "Mulholland Drive/Love Theme"--are elegant and memorable. But most of the music specifically written for the film has a paranoid quality that strings out into a deeply disturbing nothingness, with pieces like "Dwarfland/Love Theme," "Silencio," and "Mountains Falling" particularly so. If you're a major fan of the film, you'll enjoy these pieces because the recall the film. If you aren't, you'll find they just creep you out to no particular purpose.

The soundtrack includes several songs that were not specifically written for the film but which serve to highlight it. Linda Scott's 1961 version of the Hammerstein and Kern song "I've Told Ever Little Star" is bubblegum cute, but enjoyable in a period sort of way. Willie Dixon, of course, helped define the Chicago blues, and "Bring It On Home" is a classic of its kind. David Cavanaugh's "The Beast" is a lulu--it manages to be sleazy, funny, and classy all at the same time. But whatever the merits of these and the other tracks, the real reason to buy this increasingly-hard-to-find soundtrack is a single song: "Llorando."

Written by Roy Orbison and Joe Melson as "Crying," the song was a major hit with Orbison's vocal in 1961. Translated into Spanish and given an unexpectedly a capella performance by Rebekah Del Rio, "Llorando" shines like a diamond against black velvet. Del Rio's performance goes beyond words, beyond description, and creates a very, very rarified art. It's amazing, and the soundtrack for MULHOLLAND DR would be worth the price for this selection alone.

The movie Mulholland Drive, had one song that really stuck out for me. "Llorando" a cappella, a very stirring Spanish rendition of Crying by Roy Orbison, and sung by Rebekah Del Rio. Del Rio is not living anymore. This recording is special.

I was very much looking forward to new material from Angelo Badalamenti, which you can count on when there is a new David Lynch film. You could say I became a fan of his work through Twin Peaks, but by buying several soundtracks I discovered the beautiful versatility of his work. If I was able to personally change the content of the album, I would knock off the two guitar laden tracks by Lynch and John Neff which tend to get tedious and then I would considerably lengthen "Jitterbug" and "Dinner Party Pool Music" two cool jazz tracks by Angelo that are way too short. It has been a while since Angelo has blessed with breathtaking jazz arrangements (the Fire Walk With Me sndtrk being a prime example)Otherwise the orchestra arrangements are moving as usual and downright flesh-tingling."Mulholland Drive" is a brilliant blending of his bittersweet strings and hauting keyboards. These skills are highlighted also in "Betty's Theme", "Love Theme" and "Diane & Camilla" If you are a fan of Angelo's work even if confined to his work with Lynch you will be extremely pleased. Some tracks seemed to exemplify the nightmarish, eeireness of Lynch's work, "Diner" & "Dwarfland" are bizarre and twisted, much like the plotlines of Lynch's films. After hearing the Straight Story soundtrack, one of his best, it inspired the comment "See what happens when Angelo does the whole soundtrack without any "interference". Although Mulholland Dr. is a great soundtrack (he even rips himself off by using a small string part from "Lost Highway again, which I found amusing),it is clear if Angelo had been given full creative control the end result would have been a better album as a whole. I am not including the four tracks by other artists, beacuse I thought they were interesting choices, especially the a-capella version of "Crying" sung in Spanish. I just hope I'm lucky enough to find Mulholland Drive is going to play at a location near me.Buying the soundtrack was the easy part, but nonetheless just what i expected and more with the wierdness of some of the tracks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Llorando (Crying) - a reference track
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 13, 2013
While I commend the whole soundtrack, track 11- Llorando (Crying) deserves to be singled out. It is, in a word, haunting.
I was fortunate enough to grow up in a house where far too much money was spent on a stereo system and whenever it needed to be shown off, Llorando was the track of choice. I have since purchased it for several people with similarly high end systems and they have all come back with nothing but praise. To sit and be surrounded by the beauty of Rebekah Del Rio's performance is a very fond memory of mine and something I would happily experience again and again and again.

David Lynch and Angelo Badalementi go together like sugar in tea. This has twangs of previous Badalamenti work from Blue Velvet to Twin Peaks, from mysterious elongated chords from the score to quirky songs. Also a key ingredient: an awesome vocal by Rebekah Del Rio, as Julee Cruse was for Twin Peaks.
