- Reviewed in the United States on August 2, 2020Two CD set, BEST OF THE RED ARMY CHOIR
Well, I thought it might be a wise decision to have this album on hand to impress my neighbors just in case Moscow's slate of candidates win again on November 3rd, 2020 and the Hammer & Sickle runs up the flagpole again here in the Soviet Republic of Utah, the reddest state in the Rockies.
Some of these massed male vocals sing songs I've heard as jazz tunes from the '30s, notably "Moscow Nights," while the rest are stirring martial music. Most of the album is in stereo. Missing, however, is the choir's version of "California Girls" (a cover of the Beach Boys or David Lee Roth's hit), as featured on Jim Nayder's ANNOYING MUSIC SHOW.
Curiously, these martial strident songs more than remind me of Orrin Hatch's stirring patriotic songs on I LOVE AMERICA by the Osmonds' Second Generation.
"America Rocks!"
- Reviewed in the United States on December 5, 2009Owned this very same album in the mid 40s on 78 rpm, but with fewer songs. We knew Fields, Our Fields as "Meadowlands", and didn't hear the awe inspiring natioial anthem then. For choir singing, trust the Russians and the Welsh, the Russians even more vigorous due to the folk and military selections. Besides being history and a classic the album is worth the price if only for the Russian National Anthem. This is the old Soviet version, but same music as now under the Federation.
In spite of their problems, Russians remain passionately patriotic, the soul of old "mother Russia", and the music reflects this. For lovers of male choirs and colorful music of every mood, this has no equal.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 2, 2017Of the several offerings on amazon of the Red Army Choir this is the one to get. It is remastered and has full robust sound and singing, Never heard the USSR national anthem before this recording. Is the Russian Federation anthem different? Just curious. It sounded beautiful as song here by this group of superb singers. Over all beautiful and stirring singing by this amazing and talented choir. Great marching songs full of melody and swagger. Wonderful folk songs and songs of sorrow. Just gorgeous. Very highly recommended!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 27, 2007I'm so glad I stumbled onto this.
Spirited, committed, manly singing. Soul-shaking stuff! The ensemble is incisive; soloists are marvelous. The folk melodies are enchanting. The songs--and the singers--are bound up in the cultural fabric of the Cossacks, Tchaikovsky, Tolstoy, Chekhov, Trotsky... This music conveys the great romantic, boisterous soul of Russia. (Loosely speaking. Some members of the chorus were presumably of other nationalities once part of the Soviet Union. And some of the songs are not Russian).
I don't speak Russian, but listening to this makes me wish I did. What a beautiful-sounding language it is.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 1, 2010Okay, I'll be perfectly honest. There is nothing better than great choral music, and I hate to admit it, the Soviets did this exceptionally well. Many of their songs capture the emotion and pain that people of the Communist nation often delt with. They also capture the reverance and respect the Soviet people had for their own country (truth or fear based). This album certainly captures that emotional rollercoaster in several songs including "Kalinka", "The Soviet National Anthem" and the "Song of the Volga Boatman". Now, having said that, if you're expecting songs that sound like music from the Hunt for Red October. This isn't the album for you. It has many songs typical of what a person would consider a folk album. However you feel about the (former) Soviet Union, it's a fair assessment that they knew music, and new it well.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 12, 2013My mom had the original vinyl in the 70's and she loved it, I'm not sure what happened but she lost it. I saw this recording and just hoped it was everything she wanted. I gave it to her a few days ago and she loved it! She says it has all the songs she loves and the quality of the recording is just great.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 2, 2019Every single one of the songs on this album (I chose the mp3 download) is superb. If you like folk music, you should at least sample this. The Red Army Choir is first-class.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 28, 2013For me it was an inspirational album that I heard about 30 years ago. I am not a Russian, but choral music is my love and certainly the Soviet Army Chorus breaks the stereotypes. It is historic; the sound is incredible like no other chorus; it is captivating. It should be in everyone's music library. Plus it is a double CD box!
