- Reviewed in the United States on December 16, 2009About three or four years ago during the Christmas season, I was switching TV channels on a Sunday afternoon when I happen to catch the beginning of the movie Nicholas Nickleby. The musical score just swept me away. The music was composed by British female composer Rachel Portman. It's beautiful ,lively melody has a way of leaving one feeling uplifted with a joyful heart. Some parts of the musical score is like a delightful folk dance. Rachel Portman's theme music from Nicholas Nickleby is one of the best I ever heard as well as John Barry's John Dunbar Theme from Dances with Wolves. If you are feeling the "blues" or feel dishearten about life, this is the music to listen to.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 14, 2008Rachel Portman has done it again with beautiful oboe and string ensembles that lift the soul. There is some repetition of the same melody throughout the CD which ties it together nicely, but it doesn't allow for Portman's usual versatility. A great addition to any classical library.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 12, 2013The music was half of the pleasure I got from this movie. The last scene with Nickolas and Madeline and his sister and her groom all dancing in the meadow was joyous.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 2, 2005The main theme on this CD is pretty much found in every single track. While it is a GREAT theme, towards the end of the Soundtrack, the listener becomes a bit fatigued with the overjoyous 19th century life and adventures story. Still, good though
- Reviewed in the United States on March 6, 2014One of my favorite mellow soundtracks. Whimsical and sweet, this soundtrack almost makes me weep. Rachel Portman is an absolute genius!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 14, 2014Great score.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 7, 2015Beautiful music and great CD!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 5, 2013I'm pretty much in line with most of the other reviewers here. This delightful score by Rachel Portman is essentially in the same ballpark as, say, her music for Emma. The main title theme is undoubtedly the finest portion of the disc -- and a wonderful companion to the whimsical opening credits of the film itself. As noted by at least one other reviewer, there's only about forty minutes of music in this release, largely served up in very short snippets, but to me it's worth it for that main title segment alone. Very engaging -- if cute puppies could come back as music, they would be this disc.

4.0 out of 5 stars une musique qui donne le moral
Bien qu'un peu répétitif, ce mélange à forte consonance de musique traditionnelle folklorique est une merveille
A écouter absolument si vous aimez Rachel Portman

5.0 out of 5 stars Nicholas Nickleby CD
A GOOD QUALITY CD OF A WELL PRODUCED, ACTED FILM. THE MUSIC IS SUPERB COMPOSED BY RACHEL PORTMAN, ESPECIALLY, THE OPENING AND CLOSING THEMES

3.0 out of 5 stars Somewhat disappointing......
Nicholas Nickleby
Why? Well, this CD claims to be the "original soundtrack", and it isn't. Tempi are slower, and the orchestration isn't quite the same. The music accompanying the opening credits (possibly the best music in the film) is missing, and the end title music isn't nearly as joyful, or as vigorous as that played in the original film, and subsequent DVD issue. I awarded this 3 stars which, I think, is very generous, all things considered.
