This sound track CD is excellent. I have been listening to it a lot since I received it from Amazon. Please see my review of the DVD movie, which contains more comments about the music on this CD.
Here are some excerpts from my DVD review:
...The overall musical presentations of this film are very impressive, and the CD of the musical score is far from a disappointment. The skillfully repetitious use of percussion instruments throughout the film successfully recreates the sound of a thumping on the ship's hull: a sound that chills the heart of every sailor and alerts him to danger. The blood, the bravery, the glories of battle, as well as the continued yearning to acquire knowledge and explore the unknown, are punctuated by the music of Mozart, Corelli, Bach, and Boccherini, each of whom is the product of a refined, highly developed European culture, represented here by one French and one British warship on the untamed, empty sea...
...The original score's musical reverberations suggest a beating against the hull, rather than the sound of cannons shooting-there is no sharp "crack" as might be expected with the sound of gunfire. This simplicity of deep aboriginal-like drumming is a counterpoint to the sweet complexity of the classical compositions punctuating the story...If, indeed, all art aspires to the condition of music, then the miraculous melodies in this film represents the culmination of two thousand, and more, years of unequaled European cultural achievements. Listen to it! Experience it!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 4, 2009The music was so beautiful in the film that I HAD to buy the cd. It is my most treasured cd.
Yoyo Ma touches the deepest art of my soul when I hear his Prelude by Bach. The Drumming touches my most primal spirit.La Musica Notturna delle Strade di Madrid #6, Op. 30 gives me such JOY! I feel that everything is okay and the future is going to be the very best for all.
The compositions by Iva Davies,Christopher Gordon and Tichard Tognetti are absolute perfection.
I have played the album over and over and over. If I should die tomorrow, I will know that my life has been fulfulled having heard this most wondrous music (and having raised 4 magnificent children and have completely loved two men in my life.)
I wish that there were some way that I could give a gift to these people who have so touched my life.
Also, I suggest everyone on the planet should see the movie "Master and Commander".(Russell Crowe is a heart throb.)
Very Sincerely, Carol MaHarry
- Reviewed in the United States on September 26, 2022This album features original music for the film, as well as the superb recordings of classical music featured therein. This score is sweeping in scope yet brimming with intimate moments. One of the last great film music albums in the style of 20th-century grand epics like Maurice Jarre’s work on David Lean’s pictures. Highly recommend. I listen to it on my balcony every time I take a cruise, and I suggest that to anyone who finds themselves at sea.

- Reviewed in the United States on November 30, 2012I got this soundtrack because I heard one song from it on Pandora and needed to hear more. Listening to the preview, I was surprised by how non-soundtracky it sounded - there is not a blatantly obvious theme running throughout every song. And there is a huge variety of types.
I should mention, my Pandora station was seeded with the soundtrack to Memoirs of a Gaisha, and the feeling of this album is similar.
Also, this album goes well with programming (my job) because it doesn't distract. I would recommend it as background music for doing something you need to concentrate on.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 31, 2014My husband and I love the music on this CD. We sat out in our car to first listen to it because the Bose sound system is the best one we have. I turned up the volume and played it again this afternoon while I prepared supper. We plan to play this CD again on our vacation this summer. It has great "mountain climbing" music. If we had a ship or boat, it would be at its best for us.

5.0 out of 5 stars Klassische Musik perfekt kombiniert mit neuen Kompositionen

5.0 out of 5 stars

5.0 out of 5 stars Ship Shape Soundtrack
I am a big fan of soundtrack music and this soundtrack doesn't disappoint. It brings back the movie moments for me as it seques through drums beating to quarters and eerie calms before storms. However you don't have to be a fan of soundtrack music to enjoy this. It is thoroughly modern orchestral music and would suit anyone who enjoys exciting instrumental music as well as classical music fans.
I am currently reading the series of books by Patrick O'Brian upon which the movie is based and find listening to the music as I read just heightens the experience for me.
Beautiful and haunting, exciting, dramatic, all in all very pleasing.

5.0 out of 5 stars FULL OF BEAUTIFUL MUSIC
I purchased this CD for just one piece of music, the Boccherini 'La Musica Notturna delle strade di Madrid' but am delighted to discover many more classical pieces. A truly delightful disc well recorded giving lots of pleasurable listening. My CD was a little delayed in delivery but only by one day. Overall, I am very happy with the transacton.
