Product Description
Among only a handful of entertainers who bridged the gap between '50s rock fans and their Sinatra-loving parents, Bronx-born pop legend Bobby Darin's life and career were short but extraordinary. In 1959 the singer/composer rocketed to stardom with 2 Grammy Awards-Best New Artist and Record of the Year for the #1 smash "Mack the Knife." His other signature smash provides the title for this biopic chronicling his genre-defying music, tempestuous marriage to starlet Sandra Dee, and untimely death at age 37-in 1973-from a heart defect acquired during a childhood illness. Kate Bosworth stars as Dee, and Darin is brought to life by Academy Award winner Kevin Spacey, who also directed the film and sings 18 of the artist's classic hits.

You've got to credit Kevin Spacey for sheer gumption: not only did he choose to direct a biopic about Bobby Darin (not the hippest of 1960s singers), but he also decided to star in it despite the fact that he was in his midforties and Darin died at 37. As if this weren't enough, unlike Jamie Foxx in Ray, Spacey performs all the songs himself. The hard-driving "Hello Young Lovers" starts off the album with a bang, the actor working with the big band with casual ease. While Darin is now best known for his swinging "Mack the Knife" and his adaptation of Charles Trenet's "La Mer" ("Beyond the Sea"), he also explored folk and scored with the teeny-bopperish "Splish Splash." Spacey acquits himself honorably in all these genres, though he's best when he swings hard--his yelpy "Splish Splash" lacks the required levity. No matter what you think of the film itself, what we hear on this album is an actor who wouldn't be out of place in a Broadway musical. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

- Reviewed in the United States on November 28, 2004I can't imagine anyone doing a better rendition of Darin's songs, so much so that I practically felt like I was in the presence of Darin's ghost while listening to this CD -and the ghost was smiling, snapping his fingers and saying, "Go, man, go!" Totally hip, very, very cool interpretations of Darin's music, but with a unique twist here and there by Spacey. Perhaps Darin's fans will scoff but they shouldn't. This is an amazing work, only whetting my appetite for the movie. The love and passion for Darin's music shows through. Word is, Spacey's mother was a fan of Bobby Darin and if she were alive, I'm betting she'd be moved to tears by Spacey's devotion to Darin's biopic/drama/glimpse into his life. What a wonderful homage to a man who only lived a short time (37 years) as well as a bravura homage to Spacey's mother. ..and her love of Darin's music.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 26, 2004My grandmother ran a bar in Bobby Darin's neighborhood. She lived on Ave. A, and we went in on the train every Saturday. I was five when Mack the Knife came out, and I remember playing it over and over on the jukebox and picking up sailors! I sang too, though it's only now I have learned the words! Mr. Spacey has lovingly crafted a beautiful tribute to this artist and to Lower Manhattan as it was in those days: I saw my grandma's building in the movie!Bobby Darin would have killed for Kevin's band and also for his engineer; this soundtrack is gorgeous and beautifully balanced. I played in a dance band as a youngster, so it's a great thing to be re-introduced to these tunes enhanced by modern technology. I should say I am distantly related to Sandra Dee through this same grandmother.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 16, 2005I highly recommend this for all Darin fans. Darin was a unique talent whose life was cut short. Kevin Spacey has given all of these songs new life and unbelievable sound. Hopefully a new generation of people will be exposed to his music. When interviewed, Spacey said that these were all arrangements from Darin's personal papers. Also, he spared no expense on the musicians and recording studio (Abbey Road). He also said in interviews that he has recorded enough for at least another CD depending on how this one sells. I applaud Spacey for keeping Darin's memory and music alive. Every cut is a winner !! (great sax solo on "Splish Splash"; a tear jerking "Once Upon a Time" and a timeless "Simple Song of Freedom" are standouts, in my opinion). All in an environmentally friendly package (no jewel case).
- Reviewed in the United States on March 19, 2009After seeing the film "Beyond the Sea", I was anxious to find the soundtrack CD. What a delight the next day to find this soundtrack CD through Amazon at such a tremendous savings! Kevin Spacey is so believable in his portrayal of the late Bobby Darin, you forget this is Spacey and not Darin. Also, the liner notes provided interesting and informational insight into Kevin Spacey's musical background. I highly recommend this soundtrack CD for many hours of listening pleasure. It certainly has made me a Kevin Spacey fan! ....and, the bonus was I received the CD so quickly from the time the order was placed. Great service!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 14, 2006The music is in sharp contrast to our contemporary offerings and a listener needs to make adjustments, allowing that this is the music of more than 40 years ago.
In particular the music backing is the first thing that tells us that this is 'different' music.
But it is of course enjoyable because of the Bobby Darin touch faithfully recorded by Kevin Spacey.
For maximum enjoyment, one should see the movie!

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant
I purchased this CD for my husband who had heard one track while with a friend. He mentioned that it sounded like Kevin Spacey. When told it was he asked me to order it. His comment after listening to the whole CD was "BRILLIANT". The orchestrations were extremely good. Neither of us were aware that Mr. Spacey was a singer! He also commented that he would love to hear Kevin Spacey & Michael Buble do some duets. He would recommend this to CD everyone!

5.0 out of 5 stars Beyond the Sea
An interesting comment made on the 'Beyond the Sea' DVD in the about the making of the film extras, related to Kevin Spacey's singing on the film, an interviewee said 'sometimes it was hard to tell if it was Kevin or Bobby Darin singing' - I paraphrase slightly but the quality of Kevin Spacey's renditions of BobbY Darin's works is superb and bears outthat compliment entirely.
The big band behind the majority of the tracks here is precise, has real warmth which it brings to the music and really makes it swing, rather than just be a group of session men 'being Bobby Darin's orchestra for the day's recording'. The band has real passion, that comes across in the music and their performance. Kevin Spacey has genuine passion for the music too, having been a long time fan of Bobby Darin's work.
Kevin Spacey brings a zest to the songs he performs here, particularly the swing numbers like Mack the Knife and Beyond the sea.
A great CD for your collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Splish, splash - movin and groovin - yeah ...
.
"Once Upon A Time" ... bis "Curtain Falls" - Der Vorhang fällt- , wo er am Ende sagt: "Good night ladies and gentlemen and God love you, thank you".
- sozusagen "baby boomers" ;-) auf: "shall we dance", "soft light & sweet music", "moonlight becomes you" u.a. - ähnlich im Stil: Paul Weston
