For better or worse, Andrew Lloyd Webber's adaptation of Gaston Leroux's gothic horror/romance novel has done for stage musicals what Spielberg's Jaws did for fish stories, with worldwide sales of its original cast album approaching 25 million. While director Joel Schumacher's film turns on his typically ambitious visual verve, its new film soundtrack recording has been paradoxically focused in scope, yet beefed up dynamically via the brawny presence of a hundred piece orchestra and the London Boys Choir. This deluxe, double-disc version showcases all of Phantom's key songs, with Gerard Butler imparting a welcome, youthful sensuality to his Phantom, making a fine foil for Emmy Rossum's ever-conflicted Christine. Original show orchestrator David Cullen has fashioned compelling new contemporary arrangements to frame Webber's songs--which now conclude with the lilting, upbeat new ballad he wrote for the film, "Learn to Be Lonely," sung by Minnie Driver. --Jerry McCulley

I only saw this movie for the first time a few weeks ago, and was absolutely blown away by the beauty of the music. My only other contact with POTO was the 1943 movie.
The music is wonderful, beautifully composed, and I say ths as a music major in college. I felt the casting was excellent. If I want Opera singers, I will go for Opera, but this is a musical, and I feel that The leads were excellent. Christine is a teenager, so the casting of a teen for the part was correct. And Gerard Butler was great. He had both a good singing voice and also interpreted the scary and threatning parts of the musical dialogue extremely well. Plus he was a very romantic Phantom, even the facial disfigurement did not detract from feeling that all he wanted was for her to love him. When she went off with the wimpy count (and he is wimpy in the book by Gaston Leroux too) I was devastated for the Phantom. When she came back to give him the ring, and he was crying and said "Christine I Love You', it was enough to bring you to tears. I also appreciated that the movie was clean, and presented the love in a pure light, which surely does not hold true for most of the trash you see today. It made the beauty of the Phantom's love even more poignant than if he had "ravished her on the spot" which is so popular in today's culture. I also plan to buy the movie. This one is worth listening to and seeing over and over again. BTW-according to the book, it is a true story.

A wonderful soundtrack indeed (: I bought this soundtrack with doubt at first, seeing the one star reviews-comparing Emmy Rossum's voice with Sarah Brightman and Gerard Butler's with Michael Crawford. But I think they each have their own wondeful voice in singing the Phantom songs. As a musician myself, I think that the background music sounds wonderful.
I'm in no position to criticise or compare their voices as I'm not a singer and I hope my following perspective wouldn't offend anyone... But I think that Emmy Rossum's voice has a clear, "ringing", youthful voice that somewhat lacks in Sarah Brightman's (maybe it's because of her young age) and that's also why she fits perfectly in the character of the young and innocent Christine Daae.
As for Gerard Butler, I think for a man with no formal musical training for singing, he sings beautifully. Others might think that Michael Crawford's voice is way better but I think that Gerard Butler's voice has what it takes to be the Phantom- strong, emotional, yet dangerous. In my own perspective, I think that his baritone voice suits the Phantom more than Crawford's voice (:
Overall, other than the singing, the songs has dialouges as well. Sometimes you might get irritated by it if you "purely" wanted to enjoy the beautiful songs but when you close your eyes and listen to it, you can just "see" the movie playing in your mind as the songs together with the dialouges play. (: Brava, brava, bravissima~!! :D

Extravagent and Over-the-Top. And why is that a bad thing? Those die-hard "Phantom" fans who dislike this film version or feel as though this version does the stage production an injustice really need to lighten up. Yes, I too loved the stage version. Blew my socks off! Saw it twice...once in London then in New York. Even went to university with Rebecca Luker who was THE FIRST actress to replace Sarah Brightman in the role of Christine. But folks, this IS a film adaptation. Michael Crawford was fantastic on stage, but honestly, do you really think he could translate to the big screen? I don't. You realize we're talking about the same man who played Cornelius in the film production of "Hello Dolly" with Barbara Streisand 30-some-odd years ago! C'mon, give Mr. Butler the credit he justly deserves in his portrayal of the Phantom. He's nailed it dead-on! Butler's singing IS passionate. And his sexual appeal cannot be denied. That is the true essence of the phantom. Dark, passionate, sexy, mysterious...

As for the score, it is lavish! The orchestration is flawless in its sweeping melodies. The 28 piece orchestra is exactly what a production like Phantom deserves. Totally captivating.

So, if you're doubtful about this version, just be open to it. I assure you...if you've loved Phantom of the Opera in the past, you will embrace this Phantom as well.

    Bravo!

I love the music of Phantom, but living in a small Midwestern town, I've never been able to see it live. I couldn't wait for the movie to come out! Although Michael Crawford is "The Phantom" to many people, I never could get past Hello Dolly and the boy he was then. I could still hear it in the man that the Phantom was supposed to be. I much prefer Gerard Butler's deeper voice and more emotional deliverance of the music. Both CD's are worth owning and I do. I know stones will be cast in my direction, but I do prefer the new soundtrack. Since I've not seen it live I can't compare the movie to the play, but I can state that we loved the movie. Our daughter is a fan of Phantom's music as well at 6 years old, and after we saw it first and much begging, we took her to see it. We covered her eyes for the hanging, but she sat there wide-eyed and open-mouthed for the rest of the movie just like her mom.

Enjoy them both and make your own decision on which you prefer, but don't close your mind to new talent and new interpretations of the same amazing music.
