I knew while I was watching this film that I had to have the soundtrack. What I didn't know was how difficult it would be to find it. I wrote to Sony Pictures, and to the music reviewer of the LA Times (which gave the soundtrack a rave review), but no one answered my emails as to where I could buy the soundtrack. I finally found it at Amazon MarketPlace and I was just thrilled. (It is, by the way, listed as an import. From China, I guess.) I love the music. It's all delightful. I want to say it is "hardy" and soft and surprising from track to track.
This is not the first time (by far) that I have tried, with no luck, to buy a soundtrack after having seen a movie... I wonder why this is? Film distributors and studios don't want to sell soundtracks? Ah well, I think they live in a world of their own anyway......
The DVD has a feature describing the significance of the music in the film; I won't repeat that. I will tell you that the soundtrack album takes you back to the film with evocative incidental music, and the period pieces ("Sway with Me" is my new favorite jazz song). The last track is an auditory montage of sounds, dialog, and music.
If you love the film, you'll appreciate having this CD. Great to drive to in the morning commute....
A talented mixture of very ethereal, dramatic & nostalgic music. Great ballroom dance tunes. Some variations on classical & even a little Opera. Super mix. When you can sit & really listen, this is what you'll want to play. Can't recommend it highly enough.
Uno de los mejores soundtracks de los últimos años. Evocador, provocativo, sutil; en fin, una excelente oportunidad para escuchar buena música y recordar también un film maravilloso.
I was introduced to this album by a friend; and it was love with the first song most of the original orchestral music is by Shigeru Umebayashi and is absolutely sublime. Incredible production and sound an all around great soundtrack. There is and extended version of this album that contains twenty songs and is worth looking for. Why this is not a better known piece of music I will never know . I saw the movie and took a big chance and bought the CD of the music.
Wow just a wonderful soundtrack. The recordings are all just outstanding -- quality work. And amazing, these are all such complete songs, that you can listen to the entire album -- there are only 2 short 35 second songs that would only be found on a "soundtrack".
I highly recommend this album -- a gem -- buy it while it's still available!
As an update - April 2012 - this CD remains one of my favorites.
