While Howard Shore's Golden Globe-winning score offers a masterful orchestral impression of industrialist Howard Hughes' troubled psychic landscape, this collection of pop tunes, swing and le hot jazz musically frames the historical eras covered by Martin Scorsese's acclaimed biopic. The director (always intimately involved in his film's scoring and song choices) delivers a collection that's a shrewd illusion in its own right. Vintage performances by big band icons Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller and Artie Shaw and eclectic pop, jazz and blues by the Ink Spots, Bing Crosby, Django Reinhardt and Leadbelly are interspersed with contemporary performances that seamlessly replicate the 1920s-40s aura with deceptive grace. Rufus Wainwright playfully vamps the pop mannerisms of the day on Gershwin's "I'll Build a Stairway to Paradise" and "After You've Gone" while sister Martha delivers a world-weary "I'll Be Seeing You." Elsewhere, David Johansen keeps his penchant for mugging well in check on the sprightly "Ain't Cha Glad," while fine contributions from Vince Giordano and The Manhattan Rhythm Kings complete the soundtrack's time-tripping musical sleight of hand. --Jerry McCulley

- Reviewed in the United States on January 12, 2005First, this is not the background score for the film THE AVIATOR but rather the actual, original period songs that Scorsese used to create atmosphere to the scenes.
Any sophisticated movie-goer knows that Marty Scorsese always chooses his music very carefully. This time, to invoke the jazz era of an America emerging on the world stage (just as Hughes is emerging in the public mind), Scorsese has provided an amazing compilation of popular music from the 1920s and 1930s. Sonically, these recordings are pristine and sound better than they ever could off of old RCA radios or 78 rpm records. The songs are of the big-band/swing flavor with a wide variety of artists represented. If you like this sort of thing, you will enjoy this CD. (Don't miss the closing track: Lead Belly's "Howard Hughes." No doubt this was added not just for thematic reasons, but also because Lead Belly was the first blues musician that moved Scorsese.)
And in case you haven't gotten enough of this era, you may want to check out the soundtracks to THE CAT'S MEOW (for mostly re-recorded songs weighted towards the 1920s) and RADIO DAYS (for actual, original songs weighted towards the late 1930s and early 40s). There is little overlap between these collections, so they make for a nice set.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 10, 2006Others before me have said what I would have said, most notably The Rocketman and "Gimpy" Peach Johnson, except for one thing. I can't take the last song on the CD done by Leadbelly. Ah, that voice is worse than the horrible sound of chalk squeaking on a chalkboard. I had to get up and turn it off.
Other than that one selection, I love the rest of the CD especially Rufus Wainwright singing "I'll Build A Stairway To Heaven." I can't get that song out of my head. All day long I'm humming it.
Another thing is that it would be tough to find a CD with so many great hits from the past like this one has. If you like this type of music, you'll love the CD, Leadbelly aside.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 28, 2021This is an unusual score I heard several times on Spotify and decided it should be in my collection. Some of the quieter, Howard-Going-Nuts type pieces I skip over; because I go more for the uplift of cuts like The Hercules plane being revealed, the awesome flight of the H-1 Racer and other parts so numerous they really wipe out those few cuts I dont like. What really does it for me are the actual recording of Long Beach Harbor, 1947, and that dramatic, building music as the Hercules takes off, or the wild Hollywood, 1927 cuts.
** Note there are none of the music ffrom the Coconut Grove nightclub scenes on this disc, nor the classical music heard in parts.
While I'm not that old, this is a fine album of listening that recreates the era so well.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 24, 2009Music from the time protrayed in the film or recreations by great present day artisits, including Vince Giordana and the Nighthawks are arranged in a chronological order as seen in the film. A happy inclusion was the tune "Nightmare" by Artie Shaw which for me is so familiar but one I did not know title or artist until getting this CD. (As a good source it's something soundtrack CD often do: using iconic music, not the most famous tunes but some that are in the background but still really great music.)
If you like vintage music this is a great collection from a fine film.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 13, 2020Super fast shipping, especially for this time of the year. I got this item as “used” but was well taken care of. Worth my having saved more than half the price for a “new” one. If I need to buy another CD, I will definitely look to this seller/store.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 22, 2023I bought this hoping that there would be more from the movie and intense scenes. So I already have swing music, so I will be returning this.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 5, 2010Somewhat disappointing as it's not electronically enhanced . All the original recordings are complete with the old tinny sounds and record scratches and I think they could have eliminated the latter.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 10, 2014I bought this for my boyfriend for valentines day. He's into this type of music, so he loved this CD. We watched some of The Aviator on TV one day and we discovered the great music in the soundtrack. I just had to get it for him, so I did! it was pretty cheap too, and came in good time.

1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
Very disappointed. This particular compilation omits the majority of film tracks that lend the story its cultural and historical backdrop. Requested a but seller denied.

5.0 out of 5 stars A new classic
In the days when so many "soundtracks" are just compilations of pop tunes it is a relief to find an orchestral soundtrack that harks back to the glory days of composers such as Bernard Herrmann. Howard Shore's music for "The Aviator" is as good as *that*. It contains broad sweeps of excitement ("H-1 Racer Plane") and sinister, disturbing pieces ("Quarantine") reflecting Hughes's mental deterioration. The first track ("Icarus") has the qualities of a Bach fugue.
Highly recommended - and if you prefer the other type of soundtrack there is the "Music from The Aviator" album where you can hear the contemporary music of the 1920's, etc.

5.0 out of 5 stars
I'll Build A Stairway To Paradiseが素晴らしい!オススメです!
