I debated which edition of this soundtrack to purchase, but ultimately went with the 40th Anniversary Special Edition because it didn't have some of the "fluff" that other editions did, and it also included all the tracks I wanted (specifically, "Edelweiss" as sung by the Captain and Liesl). So imagine my surprise when my CD arrived and I looked at the track listing to find that Edelweiss (the non-reprise version) was not listed, despite other reviewers stating that it was included. But rest assured, this is simply a misprint - Edelweiss IS included on the disc as track 11, despite the fact that it was left off the track listing. The reprise that is heard later in the movie is on the disc as well. I would hate to be the person who signed off on the final proofread of this CD. :)

    A little girl was humming "Do, Re, Mi" one day at playgroup so I asked her mum about it. She said she was teaching her the song, and being a Julie Andrews fan I couldn't believe I had not taught my kids the songs from The Sound of Music. Maybe it's because we have lived abroad for a few years so we have missed the annual t.v. broadcasts. (Do they still do that?!) Soon after the Sound of Music soundtrack was ordered, and we have not been disappointed.

    "My Favorite Things" (Julie Andrews) and "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" (Judy Garland--another favorite) are the two songs I began singing to our daughter soon after birth, and now at three she is sharing her joy of singing with everyone! This soundtrack has been her #1 requested car music this Summer, and now that the songs have grown on her big brothers they are even singing along with her. The boys giggle throughout "The Lonely Goatherd" song.

    Having nearly mastered their favorites, we are exploring the rest of the titles. Some we pass over completely, but I'd recommend the purchase for exposure to this classic. The jacket for the disc provides extensive details about the recordings as well. Of course the Internet is a resource for information and the recordings, but for those parents wishing to introduce their children to The Sound of Music it is a purchase worth making.

    We bought The Sound of Music CD for our 8 year old daughter who has recently developed a love for the movie. Her grandma had bought her the movie a few years ago and I, as her mother had been singing the songs to her since she was a baby.     I saw the Sound of Music on Broadway as a child and LOVED it then. The movie that followed is still one of my very favorites.

    The original CD release of the movie sound track was so very terribly awful, I couldn't listen to it all the way through. Songs were dropped or played out of order. Huh? It was supposed to be a sound track. The songs that were included on the disc sounded thin and reedy. Where was the joy and richness?

    Then, recently, I heard (and subsequently bought) the 45th anniversary release. The sound is crystal clear, warm and robust. THIS is the sound track I fell in love with all those years ago.

    If, like me, you've carried these songs around in your head for much of your life, you won't be disappointed when you hear them again on this recording.

    The Sound of Music is one of the bright stars in the universe of musicals, and the 1965 film showcases Julie Andrews' remarkable voice in her prime. It's fitting that we finally have a complete soundtrack from the film, with all singing parts.

    There are three drawbacks to this collection, however. In descending order of significance:

    (1) Some of tracks are not studio originals, but are ripped directly from the film. These tracks include background noise and applause. And there doesn't seem to be any particular rhyme or reason to them: The reprise of "Edelweiss" (from the Salzburg Music Festival) includes the audience participation, but ends cleanly without applause; but the following track, the reprise of "So Long, Farewell" includes opening applause and 8 full seconds of closing applause. Were the original recordings not available? And, even if they weren't, can't the music be digitally isolated from background noise? I wish more effort had been put into a "clean" version of every song.

    (2) The collection includes a few tracks from the non-sung score (e.g., "Laendler," "Entre'acte," and "Finale"), but it would have been nice to have the full background score available as well.

    (3) The final track is a one-off of Lea Michele (star of stage and the TV show "Glee") singing "My Favorite Things." It also appears to be a track recorded live or ripped from a TV show, as it includes what sounds like camera shutters snapping starting at 0:33. Why this was included on the album seems a mystery to me, as it has no connection with the film.

    But these three issues only slightly tarnish what is otherwise a wonderful complete collection of music. Highly recommended for fans of the film and musicals in general.
