In a distinct break from their muscular triumph Gladiator, Russell Crowe and Ridley Scott teamed up again to bring Peter Mayle's sunny Provençal romance to the screen, a change of milieu that's spawned an equally warm, often sentimentally tinged soundtrack and score. Using a trio of pop songs by the great Harry Nilsson (including the joyous demo of Nilsson Schmilsson's "Gotta Get Up") as an axis that's as effusive as it is unlikely, this is a collection that romps through Franco-pop nuggets variously contemporary (Makali's elegant "Il Faut du Temps..."), vintage (Charles Trenet's "Je Chante," Jean Sablon's "J'Attendrai," Tino Rossi's "Le Chant du Guardian"), and downright loopy (Richard Anthony's French redux of "Yellow Polka-Dot Bikini"), making room for Patti Page, Josephine Baker, and Delaney & Bonnie along its merry way. Also included are three cues from newcomer Marc Streitenfeld's underscore, a nimble exercise in instrumental post-modernism whose electronica/folk/neoclassical mélange is as eclectic as the song choices, yet characterized by subtlety and grace. --Jerry McCulley

- Reviewed in the United States on December 22, 2024The French songs, the wine country setting in France, and the humor really made this a magical movie for me. Add in actors Russell Crowe, the great Albert Finney, and Marion Cotillard, have it directed by Ridley Scott, and the result is a lovely romantic movie.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 17, 2018I love this movie. In the 18 months or so I've owned it, I've watched it 4 times----that should say something. It has so much clever wit and of course who can resist any movie set in wine country anywhere in the world? Russel Crowe is simply magnetic as an obnoxious, self-centered wall-street player with questionable practices in the stock market. When his uncle dies he inherits----or does he?-----the vineyard in southern France. I usually don't like romance-comedies, but this one keeps me laughing and thoroughly entertained from start to finish. Crowe plays his role perfectly. The story includes many flashbacks from his childhood, played with with wit and great entertainment by the uncle (Albert Finny) and the young Russel Crowe. These roles of the uncle and young Russel by no means take a back seat in the story. The boy is played without cuteness and stands solidly on his own and making his own mark on the movie. The doting uncle is anything but sappy, but the director (Ridley Scott) manages to convey the close bond between the two, through barbs, has and snipes. MOST entertaining!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 18, 2021Glad we broke down and bought one of our favorite films because it's definitely one to watch over again, especially when you want to put a smile on someone's face. We even bought a copy for a relative because she loves Russell Crowe. Crowe's character is fun as an adult - as a child, he's played by the brilliant young Freddie Highmore. Albert Finney, Marion Cotillard and the rest of the cast are wonderful as well. The movie takes place mostly in the beautiful Italian countryside, and the soundtrack - unfortunately, only available in part - is lovely. A Good Year is definitely worth having!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 22, 2009Marc Streitenfeld did a good job in selecting Harry Nilsson's three songs for the soundtrack of this movie. Streitenfeld also wrote good music that could be grouped in three independent compositions, but he opted for mixing parts and pieces from these three possible songs. I recognize and applaud Streitenfeld's ability to re-group the music in a way that resulted in three new compositions, that ended up having a certain identity, even though they were built out of three very different and distinctive themes. Perhaps, Streitenfeld wanted to do something more experimental and raise himself to the level of Harry Nilsson. Now I will have to buy a piece of software to remix Streitenfeld's material in my computer.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 21, 2020I bought this in particular for the Wedding Samba which I had never heard and fell in love with. I turned up the volume and danced around my house. Some of the songs are tinny sounding due to their age. I also enjoyed the late Harry Nilsson's various songs included.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 28, 2021Just an enjoyable romcom. Russel Crowe is really great in this movie, so out of character for him. Of course, he's only briefly in it, but Albert Finney almost steals the movies. Of course Marion Couitard is just so talented and so beautiful, really fun in this movie.

5.0 out of 5 stars Un grand cru !

5.0 out of 5 stars Ormai una rarità
