Product Description

This score follows not only Mary and Joseph's journey to Bethlehem, but the centuries of musical reverberations thereafter. It plants its humble seeds in the Middle East where the gentle tones of Persian and Turkish ney flutes articulate melodic figures, and strident Roman horns and drums bind Herod the Great's soldiers to the military terminology of the age. The score then blossoms from these seeds, extending its tendrils across centuries of European traditions. Pre-Baroque instruments such as viola da gamba, vielle, harp, and recorders guide the score westward with the elemental sounds of strings and winds. The second half of the soundtrack covers Mary's isolation and her relationship with Joseph by weaving throughout the choral writing and knitting the work together into a dramatic, reverent whole.

In the beginning, soundtracks to Biblical movies adhered to a Hollywood template with more fidelity than most people attend to the Ten Commandments. The first commandment of Biblical film scores was: "Thou shalt render orchestral grandeur unto the epic as did Elmer Bernstein on The Ten Commandments and Miklos Rozsa on Ben-Hur." Peter Gabriel's score to The Last Temptation of Christ, released as Passion, changed all that like the Second Coming. His mix of world-music elements, wailing singers, and otherworldly electronics prevailed, influencing countless film scores and emulated to almost plagiaristic perfection by John Debney's soundtrack for The Passion of the Christ. Mychael Danna departs from that path on The Nativity Story, the 2006 film interpretation of Mary's journey. His sound is more medieval and classical than Middle Eastern. Rather than blowing Turkish duduks à la Gabriel and Debney, he uses recorders and wood flutes. He likes building from simple folk themes to extravagant expanses where a lone flute segues into a sweeping string arrangement that morphs into slowly cascading voices. He taps into Gregorian chant and plainsong, and even when he uses Persian vocalist Azam Ali (from Vas and Niyaz), he has her singing an Abbess Hildegard-style hymn called "Nazareth." But this is a Hollywood Biblical epic and Danna bends to another commandment of the genre: "Thou shalt wring tears and awe-inspired wonder." You don't need to see the film to know that the heavens must be opening--as they only do in Hollywood--on "And Thou Bethlehem." Danna's The Nativity Story isn't a sea change like Gabriel, but it is a new tributary. --John Diliberto

Mychael Danna was given the task of creating a score to a film about the greatest single Christmas gift ever given to the world. He's done an amazing job. From the somewhat chilling yet welcome opening of "Veni, Veni, Emanuel" to the driving terror of "Census" to the awe that is "And Thou Bethlehem," Danna has weaved a musical tapestry crossing numerous musical styles as well as history as a whole. From Middle Eastern sounds to Gregorian chant, Danna takes listeners (and viewers of the film) through Christianity's history via song.

This album is solemn some of the time, suspenseful at others, and even a little bit fear-inducing, but it is always wonderful. I highly recommend it to both fans of the film and to Christians as a whole. The movie is very powerful, but the music drives its great message home.

    Highly recommended.

Few words can describe this 'grounding' masterpiece of music that emotionally complements the journey of Mary and Joseph, descendants of Abraham and David, all the way to the humble birth of Jesus. Many soundtracks are composed methodically or with tactful formula, but this is heartfelt, divine, meditative, healing, beautiful, well-produced and decorated with ancient instruments and subtle melodies in a way that's forthright and without pretense. Neither this film nor soundtrack will get the recognition it deserves.

First, the movie succeeds by its trustworthy biblical account of the miracle of Jesus' birth. The director's respect for authenticity in scenery and costumes and the temperament of the times provides a realistic, engaging story. Plus--- subtle, nuanced acting from the leads and supporting cast---particularly King Herod---is fantastic. The music is a combination of Hebrew leit motifs, and some Christian religious music, imaginatively interpolated with the familiar Christmas carols, Veni Veni Emanuel and Silent Night. Dramatically and emotionally, the music is very effective. It is full of tenderness and inspiring themes.

I love the music from this movie, so I had to have the CD. It is beautiful Christmas music and I often play it outside of the holiday season as well. All of the pieces are very nice and if you've seen the movie you won't be disappointed with the soundtrack. Over a hour of music (24 songs) for a great price. Highly recommended!

This was a phenomenal soundtrack. Most soundtracks only bring you back to the movie. This one went farther. It makes you feel like you would be in that time period and the emotions Mary and Joseph would have felt. I highly recommend this.Even if you can only rent the dvd to watch, keep the soundtrack to listen and reflect on the beauty and emotion that the movie gave.
