Editorial Reviews

Though Jesse Harris has benefited greatly from his association with Norah Jones--who has recorded a number of his songs, including the Grammy-winning "Don't Know Why"--he could receive an even bigger boost from this soundtrack. Actor Ethan Hawke, who wrote and directed the movie, is plainly a huge Harris fan, picking his songs for the entire soundtrack album, performed by a wide array of luminaries along with Harris. The more radical results range from the electronic atmospherics of Bright Eyes on "Big Old House" to the narcotic haze conjured by Cat Power on "It's Alright to Fail." Three different versions of the key track, "Never See You," introduce Argentine newcomer Rocha, performing the song in both Spanish and English, with jazz pianist Brad Mehldau providing an instrumental interpretation. The stripped-down intimacy of Willie Nelson ("Always Seem to Get Things Wrong"), Emmylou Harris ("The Speed of Sound") and Norah Jones ("World of Trouble") brings out the best in Jesse Harris's material, which seems to come from a place where country, blues, pop standards, and easy-listening jazz converge. --Don McLeese

- Reviewed in the United States on February 22, 2013Right after I received this item, I wrote to say there was no disc in the case. The case was shrink wrapped and when I opened it, there was no disc in the case. I don't know what can be done now that it has been so long since I ordered and received the item. I am always nervous about receiving merchandise from other parties because of this reason. I only hope it doesn't happen again. Thank you.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 30, 2007I just got this today, and have already listened to most of it. I'm happy I heard about Jesse Harris on NPR - this is going to be a favorite.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 16, 2015I don't know an iota about this film. But I do know an awesome collection of tunes when I hear it...and that's exactly what this soundtrack is! Willie Nelson. Black Keys. Cat Power. And a slew of fantastic performances by folks I haven't heard of. This album has Sunday Morning written all over it, never mind a nice, long drive in a convertible.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 22, 2008I heard about this CD on NPR and decided to buy it on a whim. To me, it is something perfect for a lazy Sunday morning or a gentle rainy day. Very pretty music. I am a fan of Feist, M. Ward and Cat Power but now I think I am a fan of Jesse Harris. Good work.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 23, 2007From start to finish this album is amazing. With the strength of Jesse Harris behind it, it is not just your average pile of random songs on a soundtrack. Many soundtracks have the feel of over packaging, not with The Hottest State. This is a soundtrack much like Once or Garden State. I cannot stop listening. Rocha is amazing. The Cat Power song is stunning. The Speed of Sound by Emmylous Harris--breathtaking. Bright Eyes adds an amazing piece as well. It does not disappoint once.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 25, 2007i think this is one of the most stunning soundtrack in my collection. all songs are beautiful - i love rocha's voice. i can imagine driving at night alone with this CD playing.
