| This weekend two new flicks
open for moviegoers. Kevin Costner returns with the
thriller, Dragonfly while pop-star Aaliyah will attempt
to win over her fans with the horror tale, Queen of the
Damned, despite the film's less-than-impressive look
given through the trailers. Queen of the Damned may be
able to out-do Dragonfly this weekend, as Aaliyah's
death should benefit the film in gathering attention.
However, the horror flick may face the danger of a
Saturday decline as Friday night may be a frenzy for big
Aaliyah fans to get a ticket in hand. Reviews for Queen
are far from supportive, but with the star having
massive support out there, Queen of the Damned could see
a solid entrance, despite the chance of a looming
Saturday decline. Its R-rating may hurt some but the
MPAA rating did not make a significant impact with
October's horror fest, 13 Ghosts, which debuted to $15.2
million, making its way to $41.9 million domestically.

ticket sales, but its possible second day drop could
keep the picture from holding out strong throughout the
frame. Opening in 2,511 theaters, Queen of the Damned
looks to gross $10.7 - 12.7 million for the 3-day frame.
Kevin Costner's new mystery tale, Dragonfly, is on its
way to a relatively solid weekend launch, but the
presence of John Q in the marketplace is likely to have
Dragonfly keep its distance from the Denzel Washington
drama. The thriller tells the story of a man who
believes his deceased wife is attempting to contact him
via her patients. Ironically, Dragonfly's
director, Tom Shadyac has been known for retrieving huge
box office success with comedies such as Patch Adams,
Liar Liar, The Nutty Professor and even Jim Carrey's Ace
Ventura, which makes the leap to Dragonfly a unique
switch for Shadyac.
While the film opens about a month following
the Richard Gere horror flick, Mothman Prophecies, which
was under similar circumstances, Dragonfly has not
picked up substantial enough attention and interest to
deliver a strong following. The film may see an opening
weekend similar to Domestic Disturbance, which turned in
$14.0 million but averaged $4,822 per-screen in 2,910
locations. Dragonfly, opening in 2,507 venues, should
reach in the neighborhood of $11.5 million for nearly
$4,700 a screen. As with John Q and Dragonfly, new adult
flicks will face turbulence in March with the many new
flicks aimed at the adult demographic, including Mel
Gibson's We Were Soldiers on the 1st, The Time Machine
(among younger audiences as well) on the 8th, the Eddie
Murphy/Robert DeNiro comedic duo, Showtime on the 15th
as well as the duo of Death to Smoochy and Panic Room on
the 29th. Not to mention Big Trouble on April 5. |
