AOTC / Spidey Face New Contenders
Well, now that the two biggest movies of summer have
grossed over $400 million combined in a three week span,
other summer movies try to make a little money. The
funny thing is that AOTC and Spider-Man will once again
combine for close to $100 million this weekend and could
double what the three new movies make this weekend.
After a huge opening, AOTC is the clear choice to repeat
as number one. Although there are critics that didn't
like Episode II that much, there is no doubt in my mind
that word of mouth among fans and non-fans is spreading
like wild fire over how great this movie actually is. As
some will return for the fourth of fifth time, others
want to see what all the commotion is about. I am almost
envious of those that will see it for the first time,
since it will totally blow them away. I myself have seen
it twice and I can't wait to see it again. |

For the Friday to Sunday period, look for Attack of the
Clones to rake in around $57 million and about $72
million for the long weekend. No matter what, AOTC will
cruise past the $200 million mark by Monday night.
Spider-Man is holding up beyond belief. By the time the
weekend rolls around, the film will be close to $300
million in total box office! Did anyone foresee this? In
my summer movie column I said that I thought the movie
could make over $300 million, but predicted $250
million. As it stands now, this movie looks to make over
$400 million, blowing all comic book movies away (the
closest is Batman with $251 million). Three day total:
$30 million. Four day total: $38 million.
Of the three new movies coming out this weekend, don't
be surprised to see Jennifer Lopez's film, Enough, in
third place after AOTC and Spider-Man. I have a feeling
that this movie is going to be pretty big. Although it
has a plot similar to that of Julia Roberts' Sleeping
With the Enemy, people will still flock to see it.
Opening in 2,623 theaters, the movie will make around
$20 million for the first three days and $25 million for
the holiday weekend.
Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron looks like a bore fest
to me. If it were a better looking animated movie, I
would say that it will come in at number three for the
weekend. But I don't think that too many parents are
willing to take their kids to this movie. On the other
hand, there hasn't been a real kids movie in theaters in
a while. Still, opening in 3,317 theaters, Spirit will
make $18 million for the first three days and $23
million for the four day total.
The movie that I am looking forward to the most is
Christopher Nolan's Insomnia. After last year's Memento,
can you blame me? The writer/director this time only
directs, but he has a fine cast this time around. Three
Oscar winners (Al Pacino, Robin Williams and Hillary
Swank). The movie seems dark and sinister and with
Williams playing a real bad guy, I can't wait to see
it. Insomnia is already receiving rave reviews and even
if it's just half of what Memento was, it is going to be
a great flick. But even with the great reviews, I don't
think too many people out there know about the
movie. Opening in 2,610 theaters, Insomnia will make $15
million Friday to Sunday and $20 million for the four
day holiday. |
