Stealing Harvard: Hit or Flop?
by
Scott Schachter
Almost three years
ago, Tom Green came to the national forefront with The Tom
Green Show, which aired on MTV. It became an instant national
hit and millions of people in their teens fell in love with
the show. Then suddenly after receiving surgery for testicular
cancer, the show just vanished and it seemed that the comedian
would never be heard from again. |
People’s prayers were
then answered a year later when Green came out with the flick,
Freddy Got Fingered, but unfortunately and to the dismay of
the millions of reviewers who loved the movie (just kidding!),
Freddy flopped and was soon out of theatres.
Now
nearly a year and a half later, along with the great and
underrated actor, Jason Lee, comes Stealing Harvard, the movie
that Tom Green hopes will be his first hit. However, many
thing are against Stealing Harvard, as for one, the film has
gone through many, many, many title changes over the past few
years. I don't know about you, but the fact that the film
company is fretting over the film's title clearly indicates
that Harvard could possibly be worse then Freddy Got Fingered
and are hoping that some people will just see the film based
on its title alone, which of course is a bad sign. Also going
against the film's box office possibilities is that it stars
Tom Green. While he does have a cult and hardcore following,
he has yet to prove his bank-ability in the movies. One can
say that his co –starring role in Road Trip proved that
moviegoers would pay just to see him, but that film came out
at the height of his popularity and also starred some other
familiar faces and hit at the right time. Freddy Got Fingered,
his follow-up, bombed horribly. While not its fault, Stealing
Harvard has the duty of coming out two days after the one-year
anniversary of September 11. With people’s minds elsewhere,
will they venture to go see a slapstick comedy? Only time will
tell.
There are a few things that Stealing Harvard has going for
it, though. For one, the ads have played down the fact that
Tom Green is in the movie but not hyping the film as a "Tom
Green" flick. The film also stars Jason Lee and while he
has yet to break through to the mainstream, he has also
developed a big cult following that will show up opening day.
Although, it may not sound like a good thing, the solid
opening of Swimfan ($11.3M) indicates that there is a clear
teenage audience that will see anything and hopefully will
translate into a solid opening for Stealing Harvard.
As for my opinion, I believe that Stealing Harvard will
open with about $8 - 9M at best. While the comedy does look to
have its funny moments, the memory of Freddy Got Fingered and
the almost unfunny commercials lead me to believe that this is
another stupid comedy with little interest and buzz, and will
likely fall hard its second week and be on the video shelves
in no time. |
