As someone
who has never even seen E.T. (yes, let
me here all those "what?!") yet, I can't
begin by describing the film as a
classic but in today's film world the
movie stands as such. What I can say is
that the power of Spielberg and the
re-release approach similar to the Star
Wars' re-issue should have Universal
prevailing.

It's been
twenty years since E.T. was first
projected onto the big-screen and
created long lines around the block,
and just like those eager Star Wars
fans back in 1997 that gave the
re-issue of SW a $35.9 million weekend
intake and a scorching $17,066
per-screen average, E.T. fans should
flock over in bus loads as well. The
famous story of the alien on Earth
trying to get back home will re-find
the heart of millions of moviegoers on
March 22. E.T.'s ad spots in Monsters,
Inc. and any other pictures will
definitely help the awareness and
knowing Spielberg, word will get out
to the general public like a charm.
The only thing real questioning about
the re-release is the theater count
Universal is likely to approach with.
The original Star Wars was only given
2,104 theaters but I bet Universal
will give E.T. one higher on the chart
at around 2650 or so. If that is the
case, the film could have a solid shot
at returning to the box office with a
gross of about $30.0 million, which
could very well over-ride Blade 2's
debut.
