Moonlight Mile (Movie Preview)
by
Ammar S.
Disney’s latest film
is Moonlight Mile, and it is sure to have a durable run as it
sets its eyes on Oscar gold. The drama stars not one Oscar
winner, but three - an incredible combination of
actors/actresses that should have critics and moviegoers
smiling brightly. |
Two-time Oscar
winner, Dustin Hoffman, returns to the screen after a
three-year absence in Moonlight Mile. He plays the anguished
father of a daughter killed in a tragic shooting. Rising star,
Jake Gyllenhaal, plays the daughter’s fiancée. Brad Silberling
(City of Angels) directs Hoffman in the dramatic Oscar
hopeful, which also stars Oscar winners Susan Sarandon and
Holly Hunter.
Dustin Hoffman was once one of the biggest box office draws in
Hollywood.
The actor pulled in audiences with blockbusters such as The
Graduate,
Tootsie, Rain Man, and Hook. Over his illustrious career,
Hoffman has been nominated for six Academy awards, winning
twice for Kramer vs. Kramer and Rain Man. He now spends much
of his time starring in smaller indie films rather than
headlining bigger budgeted movies. Hoffman has been to the top
and has remained in the limelight because of his incredible
acting, and his ingenious ability to choose great and
inspiring movie roles.
The best thing about Dustin Hoffman is his ability to stretch
himself when
choosing movie roles. Whether he’s playing a grieving father
in Moonlight
Mile, fighting Peter Pan as Captain Hook in Steven Spielberg’s
1991 film, Hook, or cross-dressing to star in a soap opera in
1982’s blockbuster, Tootsie, Hoffman has left a huge print on
Hollywood and has inspired many actors and actresses of
subsequent generations.
Susan Sarandon has remained active in Hollywood over the
years, but is more busy than ever nowadays. The multitalented
actress stars in three films this fall including MGM’s Igby
Goes Down, Fox Searchlight’s The Banger Sisters, and Moonlight
Mile. Her performances in Igby Goes Down and Moonlight Mile
have been garnering her some great buzz, which could lead her
to a second Oscar. Nominated five times, Susan once won once
for Best Actress in 1996’s Dead Man Walking. It is her
performance in 1992’s Thelma and Louis that most people
remember her for. The Geena Davis/Susan Sarandon pairing
struck chords with audiences and pulled them in for a wild
ride.
Moonlight Mile’s third Oscar winner, Holly Hunter, won an
Oscar for The
Piano. Although not a huge box office titan, Hunter should
still be able to
help Mile pull in some audiences. It is rising star Jake
Gyllenhaal that has
really been pulling in buzz lately, though. He starred with
Friends’ star
Jennifer Aniston in last month’s The Good Girl, in which he
and Aniston
garnered huge buzz. Jake has done a great job of choosing
movie roles and should continue to rise in Hollywood after his
upcoming release (the special effects extravaganza, The Day
After Tommorow, is released next summer). Gyllenhaal could see
himself with an Oscar statuette if he continues to choose
wisely.
Disney is opening Moonlight Mile in limited release on
September 27, and
could have a good Oscar contender in its hands. Great acting
is a huge part of making hit movies and Moonlight Mile has one
of the best casts of the year. The coming-of-age film could
have a great run with its buzz and will have its eyes on
Oscar. Whether or not Mile pulls in nods and awards depends
greatly on critic response, but with a cast of three great
Oscar winners and a young rising star, Moonlight Mile should
go the mile and prove yet again that great acting and not $100
million budgets are the best way to get people talking. |
