I asked the line-goers what has
happened to them over the weekend, and
they had a bevy of tales to tell. The
most common event was a flood of
telephone and television interviews
and requests for information. The
flood of attention has taken a small
toll as one of the members fell asleep
during his interview to the chagrin of
the film crew. President of the
Seattle Star Wars Fan Club,
John Guth, has kept buys handling
media requests and making trips to
obtain supplies for the evening. I
learned that at night one of the group
stays in line while the others go home
or sleep in a nearby van, so one
person is always in line and available
for interviews.
The interesting
side of the line event has been the
unexpected response from many people.
While some have issued their dismay over
people who would brave the elements for
four months to attend a movie, others
have been very positive and supportive.
During my visit tonight, I met several
people from all walks of life who said
that they plan to join the line when
the weather improves.
It seems that the
line has also become a must see
event for people in the local area and
some of the locals have taken to
flashing the line from their cars or
nearby hotel windows. I also learned
that a New York radio station sent
a stripper to the line to entertain
members in a parked van as they passed
the time on a cold and windy day. Night
fall may bring cold weather, but it also
brings a string of people who are
packing the theater for the showings of
"Lord of The Rings."
This weekend will bring a flood of new
attention to the group as I will be
attending and speaking at two local
conventions, many of which will have
members who have come to town to take
part in events such as the line. One
thing is for sure, spirits are high, and
this is a story that keeps getting more
interesting with each passing week.
