'Signs' Secrets & Meanings

Signs

I thought "Signs" is to be the best sci-fi horror thriller film possibly ever made with so many SIGNS being in the film. What I noticed is that the whole time I thought the family was an alien race and they came to pick them up. But then I noticed in the Brazilian video scene that the alien was in a area of plants hiding in the plants (just like a corn field and the expression that the son Morgan said is that the aliens only eat plants because it is a good source of nutrients). And then the fingers being cut off scene, we see Mel grabbing the knife where you notice vegetables, which are from plants.

The other thing I also noticed is that the Music to "Signs" is about 45 min's long and it ends up that it takes 45 min's in the movie until we know that the aliens are for REAL. And 45 min's or so in the movie is the Brazilian video footage. Could this be Shyamalan's other secrets of his "Beautiful Mind" or twists and turns? I agree with the replier, White_chocolate2003, that it was the same shirt that M. Night was wearing the night he hit Mel's wife and the weirdest thing to it is when they were chatting (Mel and the director), is that he was wide awake and then he just fell asleep. That made me think of the aliens being there and somehow he fell asleep and maybe the wife was running from one and he hit her and then she said SWING AWAY as if maybe the alien could be THERE. But that is my thought.

I thought this was a miraculously great film. I would like to know more about the 'signs' in the movie "Signs" and if you agree with my thoughts. I think the director has something in store for us like a sequel to explain the ending real reasons. But this film should be up for some Oscars (definitely for Mel's great role and emotional performance of faith lost and regained. And wow, what about M. Night for his great storytelling?) But who knows, this could be a sign that tells us this could be a sleeper hit of 2002 and the Oscar winner that will surprise everyone at the end of the Academy Awards.

And another thing I liked is we never saw the actual spaceship, which I loved because it leaves it to our imagination. Oh, the one part I need to know is (WHY?) does the officer lady always deny the things going on like the certain creature on the roof jumping 10 feet? WAS SHE ONE???

When they showed us the video footage from India of all the crop circles, the string of areas is in the shape of a cross as a holy cross. This could be a sign to Graham to keep up his faith and maybe the wife was sending that signal. Could it be? Then there is the sign of a possibility that maybe Merrill was the alien because of his acting about the aliens and saying they are nerds, but then really believing it. Also, the aliens could have been messengers from God to protect us from something that could be very terrible in the future as they were scouting (and we scared them off with water and thought they were deadly because of movies and stories). But they could have been like demons sent here to use us as slaves because there world was once full of plants and crops, but now they come to our planet so then we can provide resources and then they would kill us then go to the next planet and do the same thing. Like locusts or a black widow after mating and using it KILLS the mate or in our case the HUMAN RACE of about 6 billion people. It ain't that bad right? LOL

Well, thank you very much and if you have any questions, write me.

WATER was a big part of the movie. "Signs" of water were everywhere. First the little girl has this thing with water where she doesn't trust it (she thinks its bad or old). Then Shyamalan's character says he is going down by the water because it seems safe, and Graham wants his family to go as well. Throughout the movie, water is mentioned and stated as having some soft of importance, all leading up to the weakness in the aliens.

Well, after viewing the movie again, Shyamalan is not wearing the same shirt. However, I did notice one more thing. Remember at the bookstore, the old guy ranting about all the Coke commercials? I feel that this is a piece to the puzzle. For water kills the alien, maybe they were controlling the TV's to show only soda commercials so the humans wouldn't find their weakness. With all the Coke commercials, the humans wouldn't be drinking water.

Excellent movie! Questions or comments or things I didn't quite get or missed. Why did the dog try to kill Bo early in the movie? What was the name of the UFO book the little boy got from the book store which seemed to answer questions about the aliens? What did the Middle East countries do to stop the aliens? What happened to the rest of the US or the town for that matter? When they lost radio and TV reception for a while, how did it come back on? Finally, were they really aliens or demonic/satanic creatures defeated by faith in God? And if Bo didn't like water, why did she ask for a glass of water when she said she saw a monster?

About Bo, the aliens and water: the Earth's surface is 75% water. The aliens would know that just by doing a quick flight around the globe. So, they obviously weren't too worried about that. But Bo said "...this water is contaminated...". Maybe our drinking water -is- actually contaminated.

Our oceans are quite vast, so detectable amounts of contamination in the water may be much lower than in populated areas where pollution is more concentrated. It is my theory that something -in- the water is what harmed the aliens. That could explain why morning dew and clouds didn't harm them.

And using something simple and common as a device to vanquishing the aliens is M. Night's homage to H.G. Wells. This would be at least the 2nd sign of his liking of Wells' work.  When the Hess family was watching TV, Merrill stated: "This is like \'War of the Worlds'!" In "War of the Worlds", the aliens were killed by a bacteria in our air, something that is plentiful and harmless to us yet deadly to them. Something that a vast conquering army could NOT vanquish even using their highly sophisticated machinery. Just a thought to add in to the mix...

You forgot the part that the girl never being able to finish a glass of water killed the alien.

I don't think that Graham's wife was an alien. You said that the alien came back to kill Ray because he had killed Graham's wife. But then at the end, that same alien tries to kill her child. If the alien was trying to get revenge, he wouldn't kill her son.

You missed the part when the aliens kill a lot of people in the end when it says it on the radio. And when Graham's brother says "A lot of people died". So yes, they were hostile in the movie...

Great funny scary movie! Even in the second viewing I still got freaked out. Oh and I noticed that Merrill has a harelip scar. Did the actor always have that scar? Anyways, I had no problem suspending my disbelief when it comes to the aliens, since there are no alien handbook in that film.

The most frequent questions people have is wouldn't dew or moisture in the air hurt the aliens? Well, when you take our own specie if we take things in moderation (like alcohol, cigarettes, drug/poison), it doesn't hurt us. But in large quantities in short period of time can be fatal. Us humans also keep loads of poisonous household cleaners in our homes. As long as skin contact is minimal, it won't harm us in the long run.

Another question is why would aliens harvest us when we hare 70% water? Just look how people eat the poisonous blow fish. When prepared correctly the eater won't die. Despite being famously poisonous, it doesn't stop people from eating this delicacies. Maybe the aliens regard human food as a kind of delicacies.

Am I the only one to realize another interesting twist in the movie? Remember when Houdini first becomes "sick" and Graham says to call the doctor. But I think it was Morgan who said that that doctor didn't treat animals, so why wouldn't Graham want to call the vet? Because the vet was the one who killed his wife.

And another thing...
"There's a monster outside my room, can I have a glass of water?" - Bo

No becky, I caught that too but it's not really a twist.

I read in someone else's depiction of this movie that it was all the little girl's dream. In the very beginning, Bo said to Graham, "You're in my dream too?" (But that it happened so early on that we all forgot about it) Then throughout the movie the little girl said she had "dreams"; like she dreamt that her brother would die (when they were in the basement and he was having an asthma attack); she said she dreamt that. I definitely think there was something very special about the little girl, but I am not sure if the whole movie was just her dream. It made me think, though, how at the end it shows Graham back in his "religious attire" and you can hear people/kids laughing in the background - that it COULD have been a dream and his wife was still alive and well. OR, just that his faith was restored. I don't know - all I do know is I LOVE a movie that gets your brain working!!

Becky, I too noticed it but it isn't really a twist; just another interesting explanation to why Hess' plan to take the dog to a non-animal doctor.

One scene that was quite freaky was the picture in the alien book that looks like the Hess's house and the "bodies" that appears to be an adult and two small children. Night mislead us on that but it effectively gave me the heebi jeebies. Since there was only one "adult body", I was wondering where was the other adult body. OMG, could Merrill be an alien? Nope, not the case, but that would be the scariest experience to see your own house featured in a book of death and mayhem.

Lee, Ryan here mate! How good was this film? How wonderful is this director? He is a pure genius! I believe that I have come up with the answer to all things unexplained with signs. You see, the film is just a question of faith.

Remember the conversation Gibson had with his brother on the couch watching the invasion? He mentions there are two kinds of people in this world; those who "Believe" and those who think that it is all purely coincidental. Everybody has their theories in regards to Bo being an Alien, while others are saying it was just luck. Same with the wife's last words...did she indeed have a flashback to one of Merrill's baseball games or could she see what was to come? Even in the end whilst Mel is holding his son with hope that he will be okay, he says (not sure if these were exact words but...) "It can't be just coincidence! His lungs were closed, the gas couldn't get in!"

I believe that the meaning behind all of these is up to us (the viewer) and what type of person we are. Am I the type who believes in luck or am I one of faith? I know which one I am and I know what the meaning behind Signs is, but it is only there for me. Others who believe in luck will have their own meaning and cannot be told otherwise.

I hope this makes sense because I have only just figured it out and haven't quite thought of a decent way to explain it.

Well, could it be all the chemical that are used in treating drinking water?

I thought the ending was a bit of a let down. I mean, really, a tall green alien appears out of nowhere having supposedly making the crop signs? I was expecting something a little more intelligent than that. Are we supposed to believe that aliens and crop circles are real now? I think not. And was the alien meant to be scary? As when I first saw it, I laughed and seriously thought: is that the best you can do? And the movie took everything so seriously, not to forget a real downer of an ending! And Graham was a man of faith believing in aliens, come on!
