Horton Hears a Who opened very well with $45.1 million, but within expectations.
The biggest surprise this weekend arrived not in the number one spot, but instead was a holdover in the number six spot. The Bank Job grossed $4.9 million for the weekend, dropping an astoundingly small 17%. Last weekend, I wrote that “five openings have ended their theatrical run with more less than 2.8 times their weekend openings and it’s unlikely that his latest effort will break that trend. A total gross of $16 million would be optimistic.” Even if this weekend was a fluke, Bank Job will easily surpass $16 million even with big drops going forward. My apologies to Mr. Statham and Lions Gate. Other Statham movies’ second weekend drops:

In the Name of the King -74%
War -63%
Crank -53%
Transporter 2 -55%
The Transporter -44%

Horton Hears a Who opened very well, but within expectations (Lee predicted $44 million and HSX was around $48 million). Robots and Ice Age both opened in mid-March and ended their runs with totals 3.6 and 3.8 times their opening weekend. Using those two opens as models, Horton would have a total between $160 and $170 million.

In second place, 10,000 B.C. matched 300 at least in terms of the percentage drop. 300 totaled $210.6 million and opened with $70.9 million, which is slightly under a 3.0 ratio. If BC continued to keep pace with 300, the prehistoric flick would end up with $106.5 million. The calendar does offer BC some help as Easter comes earlier this year than last (March 21 versus April 6 in 2007). Good Friday helped 300 drop only 13% versus its previous non-holiday Friday.

The top 10 box office of $101.3 million barely beat 2007’s top 10 by 1%. That lead might disappear when the final numbers arrive on Monday. However, 2008 was 13% above 2006’s comparable weekend (V for Vendetta led with $25.6 million that year). Next weekend brings Drillbit Taylor and Tyler Perry’s Meet the Browns. Strangely, 21 comes out on the 28th. What was wrong with next weekend?
