The Transporter 2 debuted solidly on Friday, delivering $5.7 million, averaging $1,736 per-screen in 3,303 theaters. The debut was just shy of The Italian Job (where Jason Statham was alongside an ensemble cast), which took in $6.0 million for a $2,261 average. The original Transporter got off to a modest start with $3.0 million on its opening day and finished the weekend with $9.1 million, and hit $25.3 million domestically, but ended up as a sleeper on DVD.

Since Labor Day weekend caps off the end of summer and its target audience will be heading back to school (if they aren?t already there), Transporter 2 may not end its run with much more than the original. Sunday could be bigger than Friday considering the Monday holiday, but this is one of those movies that could easily be front-loaded due to being a sequel. A three-day take of $16 - 18 million should be in store, with a four-day tally in the region of $20 - 22 million likely. The first Resident Evil had finished its run with $39.5 million while the sequel grossed $50.7 million. Using that as a template, Transporter 2 might conclude its domestic run with around $35 million.

The Constant Gardener, which has been one of the best reviewed films of the year, took in a respectable amount for the type of picture it is, grossing $2.2 million but in only 1,346 theaters for a $1,660 average. The ad-campaign has highlighted the film for being ?from the director of City of God,? which is a tagline that most average moviegoers would probably not respond to. Constant Gardener is coming from a director who has an extreme arthouse sensibility, and City of God was a favorite in that department. The film is apparently playing strongest in the top markets, which is of no surprise considering the gritty, edgy subject matter and star-power of Ralph Fiennes (who is also an indie favorite), not to mention the credibility of director Fernando Meirelles.

The fact that the picture opened this strongly could be a testament to the current state of movies ? even a few average moviegoers might be tired of the marketplace and wanted to give something different a shot. A Saturday increase between the high-20% range and the 30%-range should result, and Sunday?s business could be very close to Saturday?s. A three-day of nearly $8.0 million should be in store, followed by a four-day of nearly $10 million.
