This weekend, Disney will try to hold on to the top spot but could very well see strict competition with Warner Bros.? thriller, The Wicker Man. The Nicolas Cage pic might have a tough time finding an audience considering Cage has a bumpy track record at the box office, but the ad campaign has been creepy, and has been a bit similar to Secret Window and Don?t Say a Word.

However, both films did have powerful stars; Johnny Depp was coming off the first Pirates of the Caribbean, and the other had Michael Douglas. Cage?s reputation just doesn?t stack up in comparison, which could keep Wicker Man from nearing $20 million for the weekend. Neil LaBute is also coming from an independent-film background, which could hurt his potential (the trailers are flashing his name like Brian De Palma in Femme Fatale?s ads).

Wicker Man may end up playing more like WB?s thriller, Taking Lives, which starred Angelina Jolie. That pic also had little star-power and still managed to have an effective trailer campaign. The Wicker Man probably won?t be another big bomb for WB (the budget is $40 million without marketing costs), but the film could still end up just short of $30 million domestically.

Lions Gate is positioning the Jason Statham gritty pic, Crank, much like Paparazzi from Labor Day 2004. Though Crank has more star-power, the release date implies that Lions may be dumping it, and the trailer looks like a mix of Ballistic and the original Transporter (Crank?s theater bookings in LA are similar to both). Statham has done several cheap action movies in recent years that went straight to DVD, and this could be one that managed to get by.
