In LA, the movie is booked similarly to When a Stranger Calls and Underworld: Evolution.
Based on theater bookings in LA, it is looking very unlikely that Grudge 2 will hit let alone near $40 million for the weekend, and $30 million could even be out of reach as well. The first Grudge surprised in 2004 with $39.1 million but had a low multiplier, grossing $110.2 million total.

Sarah Michelle Gellar is only featured in a small role in the sequel, which could strip away considerable interest ? and though Amber Tamblyn could surprise with a big teenage girl fan base, the demand for Grudge 2 (based on bookings) looks like it could even be half as strong as the original?s. Last week The Texas Chainsaw Massacre prequel, The Beginning, faired well with $19.1 million (after the remake opened to $28.1 million in 2003) ? on par with Final Destination 3 ? which will be the figure Grudge will need to beat.

The box office success of the Saw franchise (so far) and Hostel proved that young audiences are fancying torture in their horror, which means Saw III could steal some of Grudge?s thunder. Debuting in 3,211 theaters, Grudge 2 could gross upwards of $27 - 30 million for the weekend (with part of the original audience), but it could also come in between the low and mid-$20?s (in LA, the movie is booked similarly to When a Stranger Calls and Underworld: Evolution).
