The summer is off to a slow start, but things are bound to change on Wednesday with the release of Shrek 2....
According to "x", Troy topped the Friday box office with $16.881M while Van Helsing grossed $6.571M (a big 66% drop from its opening Friday of $19.5M).

If these numbers hold ("x" has been consistently accurate in the past), it would be a rather disappointing Friday for both movies. While easily toping Gladiator's first Friday of $11.683M, Gladiator had much stronger reviews which lead to a strong domestic run of over $185 million. Troy might be hard pressed to reach those levels without a big weekend total since it is unlikely Troy will be able to keep its number one position for more than a week, likely just 5 days.

Van Helsing did not have high expectations for its second weekend, but it looks like its headed for a larger than 50% drop weekend to weekend. Using an optimistic weekend forecast, Troy would come in with $51 million and Van Helsing $21. This compares to last year when Matrix Reloaded made close to $92 million, more than Troy and Van Helsing combined or two years ago with Attack of the Clones bringing in $80 million. The summer is off to a slow start, but things are bound to change on Wednesday with the release of Shrek 2.

Even with international box office, DVD sales and other possible revenue streams, studio executives must be starting to question the high costs of this summer's batch of blockbusters when the domestic numbers just barely come in line with some of the lower expectations.

Top 10 Friday estimates will be posted this afternoon, and weekend estimates on Sunday.
