predicted grosses in millions

Considering my "Signs of an Event Picture" column (below) pretty much sums up all the thoughts I've come up with since December on Signs, I'll keep this short and simple. In the world of promotion, Signs has had fierce attacks on the media as of late. This week writer/director M. Night Shyamalan has appeared in just about every magazine or news group known to man, or if not him, Gibson or something in relation to the movie, with the cast also attacking talk shows. The cover of Newsweek even asks the query, "The Next Spielberg?" Adding to it, inside scoop has it that the world premiere blew the audience away.

Moviegoers have been given one of the single most teasing trailer campaigns produced from a major studio in recent memory, as millions will want to know just what this monster outside of Bo's room looks like. Signs has followed the unknown path for months, as Shyamalan is advertising his new flick with information working around (without showing) what he knows we all want to see. Filmgoers will be forced to pay $7.50 - 10.00 at the ticket window to see all the little things we couldn't see in the previews. Building up mega-buzz, Signs holds the potential to absolutely kill at the box office this weekend. And if my already high box office forecast isn't enough, I truthfully see a chance in the low $70's as a possibility. If its opening credits is any indicator, M. Night Shyamalan understands this is a huge subject and knows very well that this could be the event film of the year for many thriller/horror moviegoers across the world.
